DIY #3 at the Winter Fresh Start Retreat: Ayurvedically Inspired Winter Spice Blend

Winter is the season of cold, heaviness, and slower digestion which is why warming spices are traditionally used to support the body this time of year.

At the retreat, we’ll be making a custom winter spice blend with ginger, cinnamon, cloves, turmeric, and fenugreek. These spices are known in Ayurveda for helping to warm the body, support digestion and circulation, and keep energy steady during colder months.

This blend can be used in simple, everyday ways:
• Stir into oatmeal or warm cereals
• Add to soups, stews, or roasted vegetables
• Mix into warm milk or tea
• Sprinkle into baked goods or smoothies

You’ll leave with your own jar and easy ideas for using it throughout winter.

One of the hands-on experiences at the Winter Fresh Start Retreat (Jan 10th) is creating your own Moon Milk Mixer — a simple Ayurvedic blend designed to support deep rest and nervous system calm.

Moon milk is a warm, spiced beverage traditionally used in Ayurveda to help the body unwind in the evening. These mixers combine grounding herbs, gentle spices, and natural sweetness to support:

A calmer nervous system
Better quality sleep
Reduced evening restlessness
Healthy digestion before bed

At the retreat, you’ll learn:

What makes moon milk so supportive during winter
How each ingredient works from an Ayurvedic perspective
How to customize your blend for your body and sleep needs

You’ll make your own moon milk mixer to take home (and two other DIYS), so you can continue this calming ritual long after the retreat ends.

This is just one of several grounding, practical DIYs designed to help you feel more rested, nourished, and supported through the winter season. To learn more about all the retreat: https://onewithnatureayurveda.com/winter-fresh-start-retrea

Every hike has a moment where it begins to level out.

Massage therapy school is complete, and I will take my licensing exam in a week. This chapter is ending, but the friendships I’ve made along the way will definitely not.

A mix of excitement and a little sadness, but mostly gratitude to have a new way to help people heal.

Looking forward to weaving traditional massage therapy into my Ayurvedic offerings and seeing where the next trail leads.

Sometimes silence says everything.

Sometimes, we need to step away from the noise and let nature do the resetting. To breathe, really breathe, the pure, unadulterated air of a place untouched by hurry or worry.

One visit was not enough. If I lived near Telluride, I’d find my way to these falls often. Here, the air is pure, the water alive, and the only sound is the soft, steady rhythm of nature reminding us to slow down.

Today’s session prep is all about deep nourishment for the nervous system. Shiro Pichu + Kansa Wand Marma Activation.

I’ll be using Brahmi oil, a powerful Ayurvedic herb known to calm the mind, support memory + focus, and soothe stress. When applied warm to the crown and scalp, it invites deep relaxation and balance.

Shiro Pichu therapy supports:
• Relief from stress, anxiety & mental fatigue
• Better sleep + a quieter mind
• Soothing headaches or tension
• Enhanced concentration and clarity
• Grounded nervous system + emotional balance
• Nourished scalp and hair health

The addition of the kansa wand allows gentle pressure on marma points, the subtle energy centers, helping release stagnant tension while guiding prana (vital energy) to flow freely again.

If your mind has been in overdrive or restful sleep feels out of reach, this therapy is a beautiful way to reset.

I’m with Leon, time to wrap up in a blanket on the couch because fall has officially arrived. Brrr!

This cooler, breezy weather is what Ayurveda calls Vata season — light, dry, and a little unpredictable (kind of like the wind last night). It’s the time to slow down, warm up, and find comfort in the simple things like soft blankets, warm tea, and extra snuggles.

My feet have been through a lot over the past year and a half, multiple fractures, neuromas, and a month in a boot. Now that I’m finally out, I’m leaning into a blend of therapies to support my recovery.

Here I’m using a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal poultice for bone knitting, a practice that helps draw circulation, reduce inflammation, and encourage the body’s natural repair.

What I love is how healing systems can complement one another. I’m combining western care (boot) with the wisdom of both Ayurveda and TCM, two ancient traditions that may come from different lineages but share a common approach in that the body can heal itself when supported with nature and balance.

In Ayurveda, a basti is a nourishing therapy where a small ring of dough is placed on a specific body area and filled with a warm, herbalized oil. The dough creates a seal, allowing the oil to pe*****te the tissues so its healing qualities can gently soak in.

Each location has its own purpose:
Hridaya Basti (Heart Basti) – what I’m doing in this picture, placed over the heart to support emotional balance, circulation, grief, and a sense of calm.
Kati Basti (Back Basti) – spine & lower back comfort, stiffness, or sciatica.
Janu Basti (Knee Basti) – to soothe the knees and support mobility.
Nabhi Basti (Navel Basti) – balancing digestion and gut health at the body’s center.
Greeva Basti (Neck Basti) – easing tension and stiffness in the neck and shoulders.

I’m now offering these beautiful therapies in my Ayurvedic practice. If you’re curious whether a basti might be right for you, feel free to reach out with questions. I’d love to guide you.
