It’s been an exciting start to 2026 at Gym Rat Performance & Wellness, and we have some highlights to share!

There are so many things that can go wrong in the body to impair our ability to perform this movement. Often, impaired ankle mobility is a factor in our ability to squat deeply, but if you try this movement, and struggle, it may be any number of things! Reach out to Gym Rat if you want to figure out how to improve your movement!

What exercises should you be doing in the gym? The answer is different for everyone and is highly dependent on your level of experience. If you’re less experienced, it’s a great idea to use weight machines rather than free weights. Why? The machines require less of your energy to be used on stabilizing the movement, and allow you to simply push or pull in a fixed plane of movement!

Over time, you will build coordination moving in that plane, and will be able to appropriately progress to more challenging exercises without the original risk of injury!

How long are you going to live? Try this test to find out! Performing this sit to stand movement well correlates to better longevity and independence! Why is that? Being able to stand up without using your hands doesn’t directly mean your are going to live longer, but the factors that contribute to being able to perform this movement like strength, mobility, and balance are improved from lifestyle choices like exercise, sports, and physical activity! The active, healthy lifestyle is the real causation of an improved healthspan!

We’re excited to announce Gym Rat is NOW ACCEPTING INSURANCE for physical therapy patients with coverage from these insurance providers!!

**Special Note for WHIRLPOOL EMPLOYEES**
-Although we are not in-network with Healthscope, we do offer a massive discount on cash-based physical therapy appointments if you bring your active Whirlpool ID! Essentially, we will only charge you the equivalent of the co-pay amount from the high deductible plan, so going cash-based has no additional cost for you!!

BIO:
A former four-sport athlete, James became a physical therapist because of his love for human performance. He loves working with athletes of all ages and abilities, whether it be performance training or rehab, he loves assisting people towards their health and fitness goals.

Outside of the gym, James has stayed active in recreational sports, and still holds the record at GVSU for “Most Intramural Games Played.” He is extremely competitive and loves any activity that can be ‘won.’

Self-Described as a nerd, he is an avid Star Wars and Marvel fan, and recently began playing Magic: The Gathering. In his free time, James can be found spending time playing with, or walking/running his Siberian Husky, Apex.
