In 1987, President Ronald Reagan recognized March as Developmental Disabilities Month to increase public awareness and support for Americans with developmental disabilities. Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month highlights the importance of creating a society where people with disabilities are empowered to contribute to their communities.

During March, the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities encourages families and individuals impacted by developmental disabilities to share their stories through photos, videos, and art, letting everyone know that “We’re here all year”!

Haben Girma began losing her sight and hearing at a young age and uses Braille and ASL to communicate and navigate her environment. Girma is the first Deafblind person to graduate from Harvard Law School. She was also named a White House Champion of Change for her advocacy work for students with disabilities.

Haben frames disability as a natural part of the human experience: “My disability is not something I’ve had to overcome. I’m still Deafblind. The biggest barrier I face is ableism, the widespread beliefs and practices that value nondisabled people over disabled people.”

As a lawyer, accomplished writer, and disability rights advocate, Haben Girma’s work focuses on how disabilities drive innovation, challenging ableism, and pushing for accessibility. Haben, who maintains that the only thing she can’t do is a cartwheel, continues to push for change for the disability community every day.

Headed to the Career Fairs today and tomorrow? February 9 is the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Fair, and February 10 is the All-Majors Fair. This is an opportunity for students to meet with employers and recruiters to discuss jobs, internships, and other career opportunities.

SAS is partnering with Career Services and Oklahoma ABLE Tech to ensure you have the best experience possible by providing a Sensory Friendly Space. This space is open to any student who needs a quieter place to reset, take a break, use sensory tools, or ask questions. SAS will be located in the Remember the Ten lobby. We encourage you to stop by at any point during the event.

Here are some sensory-friendly tips for Career Fair season:
• Bring headphones or earbuds to manage sound (noise cancellation, transparency, or adaptive audio)
• Wear sunglasses or light-dimming glasses if the bright lights are overstimulating
• Carry a small sensory item (fidget, stress ball, grounding tool) in your pocket
• Use a planner or notes app to track which employers you want to visit and schedule breaks
• Bring a water bottle and wear comfortable professional clothing
• Prepare communication supports (scripts, notes, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tools) if helpful
• Use calming strategies before arriving (music, breathing, stretching, or a short walk)

Remember, you’re welcome to move at your own pace and use whatever supports work best for you. We’re excited to see you there!

Finals are approaching, are you ready?

We encourage all students to take small, steady steps before finals week arrives. Preparing early can help reduce stress and support your well-being.

Here are a few ways to set yourself up for success:
- Create a study plan now. Break course materials into manageable sections and schedule short review sessions throughout the week.
- Avoid all-night study sessions. Rest is essential for memory, focus, and overall health. Give your brain time to recharge.
- Practice grounding and breathing techniques. Slow, intentional breathing can help manage stress and improve concentration.
- Use campus resources. Tutoring, the LASSO Center, the Writing Center, and library services offer support for every subject area.
- Check your accommodations. If you have testing accommodations, confirm details in AIM and reach out to SAS if you have questions.
- Stay hydrated and take mindful breaks. Gentle movement, stretching, and brief pauses can help you refocus.

Preparing early makes finals week more manageable. If you need support or have questions about accommodations, Student Accessibility Services is here to help.
