It's our final week of celebrating Disability Awareness Week all month long with weekly tips to make your social media content more accessible! This week's tip is to always caption your videos.

A lot of people watch videos without sound or rely on captions to understand them. If you post videos, make sure to:
• Use captions for all spoken dialogue.
• Check auto-captions for accuracy. Captions should be at least 99% accurate.
• Make sure important information isn’t only shared through audio.

Before you post, ask yourself: Would my content still make sense with the sound off?

Autism Acceptance Month emphasizes understanding, inclusion, support, and moving beyond awareness towards meaningful acceptance to enable Autistic people to thrive authentically.

It's week three of celebrating Disability Awareness Week all month long with tips to make your social media content more accessible! This week's tip is to make hashtags screen-reader-friendly!

How you format hashtags can affect how they’re read by assistive technology (AT)! Capitalize each word of your multi-word hashtags ( ) and avoid all lowercase ( ). This is called writing in CamelCase or Pascal Case.

CamelCase hashtags are one of the easiest digital accessibility practices to implement!

Finals week is right around the corner, and we know it can be a stressful time. At Oklahoma State University Student Accessibility Services (OSU SAS), we’re here to support you with accommodations, resources, and encouragement so you can finish the semester strong!

Reminders for Finals Week
• Communicate with your professors – Confirm the time and location of your final exams and any additional requirements with your professor before finals week arrives! It never hurts to revisit how your accommodations will be provided for finals week.
• Book your testing appointment NOW! – Appointments at University Assessment and Testing will begin filling up rapidly for finals week! SAS recommends booking your testing appointment as soon as possible to avoid the rush or having no available testing slots left.
• Prioritize self-care – Finals are overwhelming, and it is important to remember to take care of your basic needs. Taking breaks, eating well, and striving to get good sleep will help contribute to success during finals week!

As the semester winds down, intake appointments for Spring 2026 will end on April 10, 2026. Our team will continue to support students with temporary or unexpected accommodation needs beyond this date.

If you’re planning ahead for Fall 2026, we encourage you to schedule your intake appointment through the AIM portal soon. It's week two of celebrating Disability Awareness Week all month long with weekly tips to make your social media content more accessible! This week's tip is to describe your images with alt text!

Not everyone can see your images. Alt text makes sure they don’t miss out. Use this formula: Subject + action + context. An example of alt text could be something like: "A student uses a tablet to communicate during a group project meeting."

Keep in mind:
• Focus on what’s important.
• Keep it short and meaningful.
• Skip phrases like “Image of” or “Photo of.”

Before you post, ask yourself: What would someone need to know if they couldn’t see this? Have I included that in my alt text?

Disability Awareness Week is April 12-18, but we're celebrating all month long with weekly tips to make your social media content more accessible! This week's tip is to write captions people can actually understand.

• Use plain language and keep sentences short.
• Break up long captions into smaller chunks.
• Avoid slang, jargon, or acronyms unless you explain them.
• Be clear about links. Tell people where they’re going. Instead of "Learn more at [link]", try "Learn more about our campus tutoring services at [link]."
• Include key information from your graphics in the caption so no one misses important details

Before you post, ask yourself: Would someone understand this post quickly on their first read? Even if they can't see the image or graphic?

In March of 1990, more than 1,000 people marched to the Capitol to demand that Congress pass the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Upon arrival to the steps of the Capitol Building, around 60 people with disabilities threw aside their mobility aids to crawl up the steps. The Capitol Crawl served as a powerful physical demonstration that accessibility, especially accessible architecture, is key to providing equity and access to the disability community. The landmark ADA was passed in July 1990.

Jennifer Keelan, as a child, participated in the Capitol Crawl. Around Jennifer are others “crawling” up the steps of the Capitol in protest.

In 1987, President Ronald Reagan recognized March as Developmental Disabilities Month to increase public awareness and support for Americans with developmental disabilities. Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month highlights the importance of creating a society where people with disabilities are empowered to contribute to their communities.

During March, the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities encourages families and individuals impacted by developmental disabilities to share their stories through photos, videos, and art, letting everyone know that “We’re here all year”!
