As we enter the holiday season, assistive technology (AT) devices from the recreation, sports, and leisure AT category can help families connect with each other. Often, this type of AT is modifiable so individuals with various disabilities can engage meaningfully. Key aspects include universal design, sensory inclusivity, multiple input/output options, easy grasp/manipulation, and adaptability.

Some fun examples are the Dice Roll Switch, Talking GlowDice, Nintendo Switch controllers, hands-free cards, Braille Uno, Jumbo, Braille dominoes, and a switch-adapted dice roller. Learn more about AT for Recreation, Sports, and Leisure on our AT discovery webpage at https://www.okabletech.org/at-discovery/recreation/

Larkin trialed an Obi Feeding Robot through the Bethany Children’s Health Center Assistive Technology (AT) Demonstration/Loan Program. Bethany Children’s Health Center is one of Oklahoma ABLE Tech’s Core Program Partners.

The Obi Feeding Robot is a robotic feeding device used to help individuals with disabilities control the pace and selection of their meals using accessible switches. A small spoon is attached to the robotic arm to give individuals bite-sized portions of food. The plate has four different types of food compartments that help separate meals.

Larkin’s mom shared that Larkin is becoming more independent at mealtimes with the AT device.

“Thanks to the Obi Feeding Robot, he can enjoy family dinners without having to wait on others,” Larkin’s mom said. “He is now able to have a choice in what he eats and eats at his own pace.”

Oklahoma ABLE Tech collaborates with organizations across the state that support and promote awareness, access, and acquisition of assistive technology devices and services. Thank you to the Bethany Children’s Health Center for being a trusted partner!

If you find yourself cleaning out your spaces this season, keep an eye out for unused durable medical equipment (DME) that is still in good working condition!

If you or your family members have DME they no longer need, consider donating it to the Oklahoma ABLE Tech Device Reutilization Program. Our team retrieves gently-used DME, sanitizes, refurbishes, and performs light repairs when necessary. These devices are then reassigned to Oklahomans who need them, regardless of income. Priority is given to SoonerCare members.

To donate DME, you can text DONATE to 833-751-9128. To learn more about donating DME, visit Oklahoma ABLE Tech's Device Reutilization Program webpage at https://bit.ly/4q5Dl4Y.

Did you know that most of Oklahoma ABLE Tech’s device loans are fulfilled by our amazing student employees? These students are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs at Oklahoma State University (OSU), and the Oklahoma ABLE Tech staff are so thankful for their hard work and dedication to our programs!

Many of our student employees will be away during OSU's Winter Break (December 15, 2025 - January 12, 2026), so device loan processing times may be slightly longer throughout December and January.

Please also note that Oklahoma ABLE Tech will be closed from December 24 through January 4. Be sure to check the paperwork included with your device loan and make sure devices are returned by the due date.

Jakob was diagnosed with a speech-language delay and went to Moore Autism Center to explore potential augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices to help him communicate.

Moore Autism Center functions as a comprehensive one-step evaluation and treatment option for children, adolescents, and adults on the autism spectrum. The center’s autism specialist psychologists, speech-language pathologists, and occupational therapists partner with Oklahoma ABLE Tech to serve as a Core Program Partner, demonstrating potential assistive technology (AT) devices to help clients gain or maintain independence in their lives.

Jakob participated in a device demonstration with his speech-language pathologist, Brooke, at Moore Autism Center. Brooke showed Jakob an iPad loaded with the Proloquo2Go app.

The Proloquo2Go app is customizable and designed to help individuals communicate. The app’s versatility makes it useful for a variety of individuals.

Jakob used the AAC device to request using the water tube more. “He was very excited to be able to share what he wanted,” Brooke said.
