Psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps the Score, explains how trauma isn't just remembered, it is physically lived and relived through the body and brain.

He describes how traditional talk therapy often fails to reach the survival centers of the brain where trauma resides. Instead, healing comes through visceral experiences that help rewire perception, build a sense of safety, and reconnect the self. Through movement, touch, psychodrama, and even psychedelics, the brain can learn to see the present as safe again.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker and EMDR & complex trauma expert Michael Coy joins Lisa in this episode to continue this season’s discussion on dissociation. Michael tells us how he learned about trauma and what drew him to dedicate his practice to people coping with the impacts of complex trauma and dissociation. We also discuss how dissociation can impact the practice of EMDR and the different modes of thought among practitioners on how to use the treatment with patients experiencing dissociation. Plus, he shares that the most important lessons he’s learned as a therapist are that there are no shortcuts to therapy, and the biggest breakthroughs can come from accepting that there is always more to learn.

When a community of faith becomes a source of confusion rather than clarity, it may be operating under the influence of a "Gaslight Religion." Join us for a live 2-hour training with Wade Mullen, as we will explore how abusive leaders and institutions construct a version of “faith” that protects power rather than people. We’ll look closely at the tactics, language, and cycles of coercion that keep individuals and communities confused, isolated, and unable to see what is happening to them.

Our Story - PleaseNote : This is a public page.

“It was while sitting, locked inside my upstairs bathroom after a flashback, that EmpowerSurvivors was born. I just couldn’t believe that the pain of childhood sexual abuse that I had pushed so far back in my mind could come back with such vengeance. The flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, panic attacks, hyper vigilance, nightmares and suicidal thoughts seemed to take over my life and I thought I was going crazy. I didn’t know who I could tell or even if I should. How could this kind of thing be happening to children and adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse and no one was talking about this? No one was helping? I just couldn’t accept that.” - Elizabeth Sullivan

EmpowerSurvivors was created and founded by Elizabeth Sullivan in 2014. It was during her own healing journey that she realized survivors needed an organization that would create a “safe place” for support, provide resources and educate survivors to better understand their own healing journey and how the child abuse done to them so many years ago could manifest itself into every fiber of their being.

Today , EmpowerSurvivors, is a 501c3 charitable nonprofit organization based in Stillwater,MN. EmpowerSurvivors supports survivors locally, nationally and worldwide. We believe uniting our voices, supporting survivors on their healing journey’s , educating communities on childhood sexual abuse and prevention is the only way to lower the statistics and adverse childhood experiences that are at epidemic levels.

Today we offer online and offline peer support for survivors of childhood sexual abuse, support the family and friends of survivors, offer classes, educate the community on child abuse and prevention and currently hold a annual event for survivors and community called “Giving Voice”.
