Fur used to be a symbol of luxury.

Expensive. Rare. Desired.

But over time, people started to look closer. They began to ask what it really takes to make a fur coat. The answer changed how many see fashion today.

Bottega Veneta made its move early.

Long before it became a trend, the brand stepped away from real fur. It chose a different path while much of the luxury industry was still holding on.

That decision mattered.

At the time, walking away from fur was not the norm. It meant going against tradition. It meant risking part of what luxury used to stand for.

But things were already shifting.

More people were speaking up about animal cruelty. More shoppers were choosing better options. The idea that fashion should not come at the cost of animal suffering was gaining ground.

Bottega Veneta saw that change coming.

By leaving fur behind, the brand helped show that luxury does not need it. Craftsmanship. Design. Quality. Those can stand on their own.

Today, many other fashion houses have followed the same path. What once felt like a bold move is now becoming the standard.

That is how change happens.

It starts with a few early decisions. Then it grows into something bigger.

Bottega Veneta did not wait for the pressure to peak. It moved early. And that choice helped push the industry forward.

There is still more to be done. Many brands still rely on animal materials. But every step away from fur changes what people expect from fashion.

And slowly, the meaning of luxury continues to evolve.

New Jersey just made a move that could change how beauty products are made and sold across the country.

Governor Phil Murphy signed a law that bans the sale of cosmetics tested on animals. This means if a product was tested on animals after the cutoff date, it cannot be sold in New Jersey. It does not matter if the testing happened in another state or another country. If animal testing was involved, it is not welcome on store shelves in this state.

For decades, animals like rabbits, mice, and guinea pigs have been used in cosmetic testing. Many are restrained and exposed to chemicals that can cause burning, swelling, blindness, and death. These are not rare cases. This has been a standard practice in parts of the industry for years.

What makes this even harder to accept is that these tests are no longer necessary. Scientists now have modern alternatives that are faster, more reliable, and do not involve harming animals. Many companies have already made the switch. Others are now being pushed to follow.

This law is not just about New Jersey. It is part of a bigger shift happening across the United States. More states are stepping in to stop the sale of products tied to animal suffering. Each new law adds pressure on brands to go fully cruelty free if they want access to these markets.

There are still some limits. The law allows exceptions in certain cases, such as when testing is required by regulators. But the overall direction is clear. The door is closing on animal tested cosmetics.

At the end of the day, this is also about everyday choices. When people choose cruelty free products, companies notice. Demand shapes the market.

A quiet but powerful decision just came out of Washington, and it could shape the future of how we treat marine life in the United States.

Governor Jay Inslee has signed a new law that bans octopus farming across the state. With this move, Washington becomes the first state in the country to take a stand against an industry that has not even fully started yet.

Right now, there are no commercial octopus farms operating in the U.S. But that is exactly why this matters. Lawmakers chose to act early. They did not wait for harm to happen. They stepped in before octopuses could be placed into crowded tanks and raised for food.

Octopuses are not ordinary animals. They are known for their intelligence and complex behavior. They can solve puzzles, escape enclosures, and show signs of curiosity and awareness. Scientists have raised serious concerns about farming them, especially in confined spaces where stress and aggression can quickly build.

Supporters of the law say this is about prevention. It is about recognizing that some animals are not suited for industrial farming. Instead of reacting later, Washington decided to draw a line now.

This law also sends a message beyond one state. It shows that policies can evolve as we learn more about animals and their needs. California has already followed with a similar ban, and more states could be next.

For many people, this is not just about octopuses. It is about the direction we are heading as a society. Are we willing to rethink old habits and make choices that reduce suffering before it begins?

Washington just made its answer clear.

VICTORY! FOIE GRAS OFFICIAL BANNED IN NYC!
Many thanks to and all activists involved!

History made in NYC.

Today marks a groundbreaking victory for animals. Voters For Animal Rights and New York City have won their lawsuit against the foie gras industry β€” and the ban is officially in effect.

Back in 2019, the New York City Council passed Intro 1378 (now Local Law 202), championed by former Council Member Carlina Rivera and led by Voters For Animal Rights. VFAR participated in the case as a proposed intervenor-appellant and amicus curiae.

Huge thanks to attorney Bryan Pease for helping make this victory possible.

This is more than a legal decision β€” it’s a historic moment for compassion. New York City is taking a stand against one of the most cruel and outdated practices in the food industry.

As VFAR President Allie Taylor shared, this ruling affirms New York City’s right to govern in the interest of its residents β€” human and nonhuman alike β€” and shows the power of people coming together to demand justice and compassion.

This victory belongs to every advocate, volunteer, supporter, and voter who refused to accept cruelty as the status quo. πŸ¦† πŸͺΏ πŸ’œ
