If people are looking for ways to support their communities during the current government shutdown, and the withholding of the contingency funds that would continue to fund the SNAP program, there are multiple avenues to help.
I've been sharing posts for local resources on my Instagram. Several local markets are putting plans in place and that may be a good place to start.
Donations to food pantries are also a good option, and will allow you to focus your support on your own neighbors.
Perhaps the most impactful, however, is donating funds to a food bank, whose entire operation is procuring and distributing food in the most econonical and efficent ways possible.
For the Hudson Valley you may want to consider the Regional Foodbank of Northeast New York. With distribution centers in Albany and Montgomery, they serve 23 counties in our part of the state and have a 100 score on the Charity Navigator.
