Eating is inherently a mindful practice! We use every one of our senses to enjoy a meal and it starts way before we take a bit.
We can start first by slowing down enough to listen for the signs of hunger: a rumbling stomach, a hollow/empty feeling, a salivating mouth... If they're present, we know it's time to eat! If not, pause and see why you're so inclined to grab a snack or make a meal. It could have nothing to do with hunger at all. Taking this pause now, at the grocery store, and during a meal helps us to only intake what serves us and leave the rest.
When viewed from a yogic lens, eating well also means building a relationship with your gut! Intuition is often felt in the belly and when you learn to listen to the physical and emotional cues that come up there, you can get better at learning what you like and dislike, and who you authentically are!

Rest is a key component for processing both nutrients and information in our bodies and minds. Truly no part of our systems can function properly without adequate sleep! But good rest starts even before you lay down in bed. Implement these steps to sleep well:

Create and stick to a pre-sleep routine: between 120 and 30 minutes before bed, we want to signal to our bodies that it is time to wind down, so dim the lights, turn off all screens, take a warm bath, read a physical book, stretch gently, meditate, journal, or sip some herbal tea. Also avoid the intake of caffeine, eating a heavy meals, and doing strenuous exercise starting 1-2 hours before it's time for bed.

Pick a wake-up time and keep it consistent. This will train your body's internal clock!

Limit light and sound while sleeping by using blackout curtains and removing technology from the room.

Keeping your room cool at night can also aid in more restful sleep.

Whether we are conscious of it or not, how we breathe impacts how we feel. Short, constricted breaths in the chest can perpetuate or lead to anxiety and worsening mood...

Breathing well means breathing using your diaphragm! The diaphragm is an umbrella shaped muscle that lies at the bottom of our rib cage that not only grows wider in every direction, it also drops down into the belly when we inhale. This action makes room for the lungs to fully expand with oxygen! Cool, right?

Want to try Pranayama or methods of breathing that can calm the nervous system? Visit www.mainstreetyogawellness.org/videos to try out humming breath and/or learn more about functional breath!

Learn about Suzanne's work called Yoga Glow Up: Body, Mind & Mood!

In a post-COVID era where young people are perpetually drawn to look outside of themselves for distractions and validation, learning tools for nervous system regulation instead provides youth with healthy coping mechanisms, avoiding things like substance abuse or a social media addiction. Learning to relate to oneself with compassion and curiosity reduces the risk of self-harm and encourages people of all ages to development authentic discernment, as well as healthy relationships with themselves, with others and with their community! Additionally, self-regulation is critical to a person’s neurological ability to learn, heal and grow!!

In Yoga Glow Up: Body, Mind & Mood, a Somatic Social and Emotional Learning series, offered in partnership other local orgs, Suzanne introduces Stoughton-area teens (as well as parents and educators) to how awesome they already are while teaching self-care and nervous system regulation practices!!

Thanks for bringing the wisdom of SomaYoga to youth in our community Suzanne!
