Civil rights activist and educator Mary McLeod Bethune learned the importance of education at an early age. After completing her education, she opened the Daytona Normal and Industrial Institute for Negro Girls with just $1.50.

She devoted herself fully to the school, teaching classes, handling administrative duties, and fundraising. Eventually the school became the co-ed Bethune-Cookman University. In 1935, she founded the National Council of Negro Women to empower black women concerned with social justice and human rights issues. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt appointed Bethune as director of the Division of Negro Affairs in the National Youth Administration, making her the first African American woman to head a federal agency.
