Happy National ASL Day!
April 15 marks the founding of the American School for the Deaf in 1817, the first permanent school for the Deaf in the United States and a powerful milestone in Deaf history.
American Sign Language is not just a way to communicate. It is a rich, fully developed language with its own grammar, expression, and cultural depth. Today, it is one of the most widely used languages in the country and a vital part of the Deaf community.
Learning even a few signs can make a real difference. It creates connection, builds understanding, and helps break down barriers that should not exist in the first place. ASL is identity, culture and connection. Many Deaf Advocates continue to push for language access in schools, healthcare, workplaces and more.
ASL is a beautiful language. Take the opportunity to learn it.
At Access Independence, we are proud to support the Deaf community and encourage everyone to take the time to learn, engage, and build a more inclusive world.
Let's celebrate ASL and the Deaf Community!
