Yes, we know it’s been a while since we last posted. We have been to some pretty tasty places in the past couple of months. But this one we knew we had to share with you guys!

Pierce Tavern in Downers Grove is definitely a place we are anxious to go back to. We had an impromptu date night and ended up at this quaint tavern in downtown Downers Grove. The atmosphere was what I would call rustic industrial with Edison light bulbs, unfinished wood and metal accents. It was pretty busy for a Wednesday night so we knew that was a good sign.

Our waitress was very helpful since it was our first time there. She didn’t rush us into making decisions and gave us plenty of time to scourer their vast drink and food menu. They had a large beer and alcohol selection and had half off bottles of wine that night!

We ended up starting with cauliflower bites. They were delicious! They had cherry peppers and Parmesan cheese. For our meals, Cody got the blackened mahi mahi sandwich and I got the ribeye melt. Cody enjoyed his meal but said that it was a very wet sandwich and seemed to fall apart. But the flavor was really good! I absolutely loved my sandwich. I would go back solely for that sandwich. It was on sourdough bread that they had pressed Parmesan cheese into and had this onion marmalade on it that was to die for.

I think the only complaint that we had was it was pretty loud. I couldn’t even imagine how loud it would be on a weekend. There were times where I couldn’t even hear Cody across the table from me. However, we will definitely go back no matter how loud it is because the food is definitely worth it!

Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar; Vernon Hills, IL

Cody Wolff and I had been here a couple months back for lunch and were really impressed with the quality and were excited to go back for their eccentric brunch menu.

One of the things this restaurant is known for is their Candied Bacon, how could we possibly say no? This was hands down the best part of the whole meal. The spicy yet sweet taste of each bite made this the perfect to start to the meal. Cody decided to order the Carnita’s Hash, which had sweet potatoes tots, homestyle potatoes, veggies and poached eggs. Overall the dish was one-dimensional and didn’t keep his taste buds wanting more. This hash really could have benefited from a fresh raw element (avocado, salsa, etc.).

I on the other hand got their Breakfast Club Sandwich with hash browns (I wanted fruit but they only had watermelon, weird I know). Again, this sandwich was very one-dimensional and seemed to be lacking the Tabasco mayo that was supposed to be on the sandwich. But the strangest part of this whole dish was the “hash browns.” IT WASN’T EVEN HASH BROWNS! It was a really thick potato pancake that needed salt, more flavor and better texture.

I don’t think Cody and I will be going back anytime soon for their brunch but are willing to give this place another chance for lunch or dinner. The biggest plus of this place? The patio is dog friendly. Yup, you read that right, dog friendly.

*This place also has a large array of beer and mixed drinks and even have some house beers specific for their restaurant.

As this summer is winding down, we wanted to take the time to reflect back on all the breweries/ beer gardens we were able to visit this summer 🍻🍻

Hideaway Brew Garden: Located just about 10 minutes from our house and nestled away off of Route 59. They offer many domestic options, yard games, live music and simple snacks. One of our favorite hang out places this summer plus they are dog friendly!
Mikerphone Brewing: Not for your average beer drinker. Lots of barrel aged and darker beers (if you are into that kind of thing).
Lakefront Brewery: We went here on a Saturday and it was packed; practically standing room only. One of my favorites was the New Grist Gose and would definitely go back for the brewery tour they offer!
Buffalo Creek Brewing: We reviewed this one a couple of months ago. We loved the atmosphere but found the beer to just be okay. There wasn’t one beer that we definitely want to go back for.
Riverlands Brewing Company: Cody really enjoyed the STC’s ESB and the Peace and Quiet Porter. They had a really good selection of beers and good atmosphere.
Ike & Oak Brewing: I had one of the best beers of the summer here; Greenhorn (sour gose). It tasted like a Key Lime Pie! It was probably my favorite beer I have tried this year! This place has great food and beers. Definitely will be going back there soon.
Oswego Brewing Co.: We have been here a couple of times with friends and family. Cody has yet to find an Oktoberfest better than the one they have here.
Scorched Earth Brewing Co: Nice outside area where they grow their own hops. I tried the We Got 5 on it and it was a Sherbet Milkshake IPA that was DELICIOUS!
Pollyanna Brewing Company: This is the most recent brewery we went to and had some delicious beer. Cody’s favorite was the On the Bash (Scotch Ale) and I tried Keep it Easy (Coconut Cream Ale) and Pepinada (Witbier with Lime, Cucumber & Pequin Chile).

Favorites: Ike & Oak, Pollyanna
Least Favorite: Buffalo Creek

Well unfortunately I guess you can have just adequate burgers at a place that has burger in their name. We had been wanting to try this place for a while now and we finally made the time to go. We went on a Saturday afternoon and it was strangely empty for the time. The atmosphere was inviting, clean and open. Only critique on the decor was there was too many TVs and lotto machines. I truly hate seeing TVs in restaurants because it takes away from the whole reason you go out; to socialize and spend time with one another.

We ordered a cheeseburger and the combo onion rings and fries to share. The burger was fine. We both said we would rather a burger from Culvers over this one. The bun got so soggy and wasn't able to sustain the burger. The onion rings were the best part of the meal. Nice and light batter with a crunchy exterior. The fries were hand cut but soggy. For how slow they were, you would think they could have taken the time to make sure the fries were fried properly.

Overall, not too impressed. Wasn't worth the drive to Elgin when we could go somewhere closer for a better burger. They also had extravagant shakes but we couldn't try those. If you want a tasty burger with crispy fries, just come to our house and Cody can make you one 🍔🍟

As Cody called it, we were on “Jess’s Birthday Brewery Tour” and we loved every second of it. Even though we were supposed to be camping this weekend we figured the next best thing was to go visit 2 breweries that we had wanted to try.

We started in Long Grove at Buffalo Creek Brewing where we both ordered flights. We think this is truly the best idea when going to a new brewery in order to really try a variety of brews. Cody typically is more into the stouts and barrel aged beers versus myself that is really starting to try more IPA’s but my heart always pulls me towards sours and fruit ale’s. The inside of the brewery was like sitting inside a large log cabin furnished with wood benches, high tops and a beer garden outside. But since it was practically roasting the day we went, we stayed inside and took advantage of their table games. We decided to play Jenga and by the end we had the whole brewery watching us in suspense! Overall, the beer was fine. There was not one beer that we would necessarily go back for but the atmosphere and location will definitely draw us back.

We then made our way down to Mount Prospect to try The Red Barn Restaurant and Brewery. By this time we (mostly I) were in need of some food if I planned on trying any more beers. We were expecting more of a brewery feel but it was actually more of a restaurant with an extensive beer list. But the restaurant themselves only had 3 house beers and the rest was a selection of craft beers. We found a seat in the bar and started looking over the beer selection. They didn’t necessarily have flights you could order but they had 4oz pours that you could buy and if you bought more than 4, you got a small discount. Cody and I both selected 4 and also decided on getting a couple of appetizers. We got potato skins with chipotle sour cream and reuben egg rolls. Yes, I said reuben eggrolls. They were absolutely delicious. The chipotle sour cream was a little much for the mediocre potato skins. Cody really enjoyed his beers and I loved the coconut cream ale (Pollyanna Brewing) that I tried.

Trying new brews and new places is our hobby. This day did not disappoint and really was the perfect birthday weekend. Thanks hubs for indulging me and still loving me even if I was “feeling it behind my eyes” by the end of the day.

Park Street Deli Update
Upon further inspection of our fridge we actually had 2 more products!

Macaroni salad - good taste and mouth feel but a little heavy on the mayo for our personal taste.

Medium fresh cut salsa - isn't all that great seems like it was missing something ( I think salt and cilantro) but overall was too tomatoey for salsa, Jess said more of a pico than a salsa

Hey Honest Eaters!
Sorry for being away for so long!

To get back into the swing of things I wanted to throw a recommendation up for all of you that shop at Aldi.

They have a brand product line called:
Park Street Deli
It can be found in the cooler section.

We have tried 4 things in that line of products:

Roasted red pepper hummus - better than sabra for sure due to the red pepper being distributed all throughout

Brownie batter dessert hummus - this is an interesting experience because it tastes like chocolate but has hummus texture. We eat it with nilla waffers and it works.

Sweet horseradish pickles - smooth cut, good crunch but lacking in the "sweet element". If you like horseradish and pickles this is for you!

Atomic spicy pickles - crinkle cut, good crunch but wow they are spicy by them selves! But we tried them on burgers the other day and they are way better on something than alone that's for sure.

We will be on the look out for other products from Park Street Deli at Aldi, if you guys find some before us let us know!
