House Bill 144, also known as Keith's Law, went into effect in Ohio on January 19. The law improves interactions between first responders and people with disabilities. It does this by giving first responders advance information about a person's specific needs.

Fun Fact Friday! 🙃

Last week we talked about how memories can be closely tied to food experiences. This week we talk about the power of a picture! 📸

Did you know that research in cognitive neuroscience shows that pictures are strongly linked to memory because visual information activates multiple brain networks at once? 🗣

This includes areas responsible for language, attention, and executive functioning. In speech therapy, picture-based tasks support cognition by strengthening word retrieval, sequencing, inference, and narrative skills, while also tapping into stored memories and personal experience! Basically, personally relevant picture recall tasks can make learning more efficient and meaningful...pretty much, an IDEAL ACTIVITY. 🌟

Fun Fact Friday! 🤓

Do you find yourself supporting someone in need of practice with conversation skills? Maybe you are caring for someone who had a stroke, someone who needs social skills practice, or help speaking more clearly. This is a great strategy! ⬇

Pair conversation with a picture of an experience having a favorite food or food related memory. Even better, try that food again! When we eat something tied to our past, the flavors, smells, and textures activate brain regions responsible for memory and emotional regulation. It's not just about recall, it's about cognition! Our brain is amazing in how it processes and relives experiences.🍽

Having a great speech therapist is super important, but having tools and ideas of how to work on skills at home is where the real magic happens! 🏠

Pictures are of my handsome sons a few years earlier, all having a fun food experience on vacation! I miss those little faces!👦

Do you ever fall into the trap of thinking therapy will be better with fun new toys, fancy apps, or complex materials? Every once in a while, I do too... But then, I remember the power of simplicity.

Children love "forbidden objects" they might not have easy access to at home. Let's be honest, no mom or dad wants to be cleaning marker off the wall... So, I give them a dry erase marker and an eraser, and the real magic happens!

Adults...sometimes the more simple, the better. Pen and paper for an adult is sometimes the best way to keep things from feeling overwhelming. Straight forward, simple, focused work.

OBVIOUSLY...there is a time and a place for everything, all the fancy bells and whistles. BUT, this is your reminder that in 2026, don't fall into the trap of "fancy is better", let basic simplicity guide your way!

Do you ever feel overwhelmed with keeping up with best practice, most recent evidence or research, and just staying in the know? Yeah, same here!

Pro tip: you don’t have to do it all! Find a good pod cast on the topic you want to learn more about… and listen for at least ten minutes when (and if) you are driving! Before you know it, you’ll be learning and ready to listen to another!

4 years ago at this time, I was dreaming of a day where I would be my own boss, treat patients who really needed help, and provide services people couldn’t easily find! At that time it was just a dream…but a little voice said, “you’ll never know if you don’t try…”

Petrified, unsure, full of doubt, learning to block out the haters, I started taking steps to make that dream became a reality… and I’m so glad I did! Loving the life I have created, although it’s full of endless hard work, I wouldn’t change a thing!

If you’ve got a dream, but are a little (or a lot) unsure, maybe my story will help inspire you! What do you have to lose?

These ladies right here, are what building a dream team looks like! Having people along side your business journey that believe in your mission, execute accordingly, and deliver service with nothing but authentic care and concern, is what sets a team apart. I could not be more proud to have this team of women by my side as Buckeye Speech Path evolves into its next chapter! 🤩
