Treasure Coast Hospice is proud to celebrate our incredible Veteran Volunteers. Their compassion, service, and shared camaraderie bring comfort, dignity, and connection to the veteran patients we care for. This month, we have been spotlighting several of our dedicated volunteers and the meaningful impact they make every day.

Today, we proudly recognize Carl Holeva, whose career with the U.S. Navy spans 22 1/2 years of service as a Commander, 8 1/2 years active duty and another 14 years in the reserves. Carl served as a naval helicopter pilot, flying search and rescue missions during Vietnam as well as combat support missions. His distinguished military career took him from bases in the Mediterranean to Michigan and Florida.

For the past six years, Carl has generously given his time and compassion to support veteran patients in our care, volunteering with Treasure Coast Hospice as a way to give back to fellow veterans.

As a Veteran Volunteer, Carl has had many memorable experiences visiting patients. One that stands out is a visit with a veteran whose wife was so moved by the Honors Ceremony and recognition bestowed on her husband that she was brought to tears.

Thank you, Carl, for your service to our country and to veterans in our community.

The Memory Bear Legacy

Director of Volunteer Services Lisa Gunggoll and Board Chairwoman Eileen Emery enjoyed a special visit at the Gardens of Port St. Lucie, where they spent time with resident Gerry Cornell and learned about her extraordinary legacy of handcrafted Memory Bears.

Gerry moved to the Treasure Coast in 1956 and spent her life caring for others as a nurse, a calling she felt since she was a young girl. In 2009, she discovered the Memory Bear Program after visiting her sister, who was on hospice care in Michigan. She brought the idea back to our community, lovingly handcrafting more than 100 bears for Treasure Coast Hospice families over the years.

During the visit, Gerry proudly shared an album filled with photos of the bears she had created, each one stitched with love, compassion, and countless hours of care. Her creativity and generosity have brought comfort to so many grieving families and her legacy has inspired other dedicated volunteers to share their talents through the Memory Bear Program.

Thank you, Gerry, for sharing your heart and your gift of sewing, and for creating a legacy of comfort that continues today.
