Some adults living with hereditary angioedema may also experience “emotional blindness”, or difficulty identifying and describing their feelings. It can add another invisible layer to an already unpredictable disease.

In a new study, higher levels of this trait (known as alexithymia) were linked with more depressive symptoms, more fatigue, and a lower mood-related quality of life among people with HAE.

These findings highlight how important it is to screen not just for physical attacks, but also for mental health and emotional coping in HAE care.
