We recently had the opportunity to present for ACAYNA, an organization in Argentina dedicated to advancing clinical education and interdisciplinary care in autism. We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such a thoughtful clinical community.

The topic:
PANS/PANDAS Clinical Overview with Considerations for Autism and Restricted Eating

When an individual is being evaluated for autism, or already carries a diagnosis, and there is sudden psychiatric deterioration, abrupt food restriction, new-onset OCD, or rapid regression, clinicians must consider whether a medical trigger could be driving the change.

In autistic individuals, and in those undergoing assessment, inflammatory neuroimmune processes can be overlooked. Changes are often attributed to developmental baseline rather than investigated as a possible acute medical shift.

We discussed:
• How to distinguish baseline characteristics associated with autism from symptoms that characterize PANS/PANDAS
• The ways immune activation can intensify anxiety, rigidity, OCD, and sensory hypersensitivity
• Why sudden restricted eating may reflect obsessive fears, sensory amplification, or inflammatory changes, not simply behavioral feeding difficulty
• The importance of medical evaluation alongside therapeutic and nutritional support

Grateful to ACAYNA for creating space for a serious clinical discussion at the intersection of autism, nutrition, and neuroimmune disorders.

Correct identification changes outcomes.

AND Covid AND Mycoplasma AND Influenza AND Staph AND Influenza AND Coxsackie AND EBV AND HSV AND Salmonella AND E Coli AND Klebsiella AND on And on it goes. And yes I have seen all of the above trigger a flare in my patient base🧠

A prior Strep infection is not a requirement for flaring but it is to meet the agreed upon definition of PANDAS🧠

If Group A Strep does get the pathogen party started Viruses ( in my years of experience treating patients with PANDAS / PANS ) are the more common cause of future flares🧠

For decades, families affected by PANS/PANDAS have said the same thing:
Something happened after strep.

Now, National Geographic is highlighting new research showing how strep infections can disrupt immune signaling and, in some cases, trigger autoimmune reactions that affect the brain.

The article explains that Group A Streptococcus can trigger immune responses that do not always resolve when the sore throat goes away (and we know one doesn’t even need acute signs of infection). Sometimes, through a process called molecular mimicry, the immune system can become confused and start attacking healthy tissue, including parts of the nervous system.

The article specifically mentions PANDAS as a post-streptococcal autoimmune condition marked by the onset of OCD, tics, or both.

Science is starting to confirm what many families have known for years.
As we learn more about how infections affect the immune system and the brain, we have a better chance of recognizing these problems early and treating them properly.

When we understand how infections can affect both immune and brain health, we get closer to preventing years of misdiagnosis, wrong psychiatric placements, and needless suffering.

The conversation is changing, and that is a sign of progress.

Study of 1.2 million children confirms no link between vaccine aluminum and neurodevelopmental disorders like autism or ADHD.

A landmark study involving more than 1.2 million Danish children has definitively found no evidence linking aluminum in childhood vaccines to autism, ADHD, or other chronic health conditions. Published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, the research analyzed health records spanning from 1997 to 2018 to monitor the long-term safety of aluminum-containing vaccines. This extensive population-based analysis examined 50 different chronic conditions, including asthma and autoimmune diseases, finding no increased risk associated with the cumulative exposure to vaccine-derived aluminum during early childhood.

Beyond debunking long-held concerns regarding neurodevelopmental disorders, the study highlights that infants naturally encounter significantly more aluminum through their diet—such as in infant formula—than they do through routine immunization schedules. Researchers at the Statens Serum Institut emphasized that the reliability of these findings stems from the use of high-quality national health registers covering 24 years of data. This robust evidence reinforces global health guidelines, providing parents and medical professionals with renewed confidence in the long-term safety profile of standard childhood vaccinations.

Why I ditched the landline 💉📵

As a healthcare provider, I’m always looking for ways to improve communication with my patients while maintaining efficiency in my practice. That’s why I’ve opted out of having a regular landline phone and switched to text and email only!

📱 Less phone tag, more timely responses
📧 Secure and private communication
💻 Easy access to records and history

By switching to text and email, I can:

✨ Respond to messages at a time that works for me
✨ Keep detailed records of our conversations
✨ Reduce interruptions and minimize wait times

Let’s stay connected in a way that works best for both of us! ”
