Phosphorus May Be Important for Metabolic Health.
Phosphorus is an essential mineral that supports bone strength, energy production, cell structure, and acid–base balance and is found in foods like meat, dairy, fish, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. According to an analysis of data from the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey, higher phosphorus intake was associated with up to a 56% lower risk of metabolic syndrome—a cluster of conditions including central obesity, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, and elevated blood sugar that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
