👉🏻 Antibiotics ARE NOT the solution to chronic urinary tract infections in menopause. ESTROGEN is — through PREVENTION. 👌🏻
Starting in perimenopause, women experience declining estrogen levels that disrupt the vaginal microbiome, reduce protective Lactobacillus bacteria, and increase vaginal pH—creating an environment that promotes recurrent urinary tract infections. Using vaginal estrogen therapy helps restore the normal flora, improve tissue integrity, and significantly reduce UTI risk by addressing the root cause.
In contrast, chronic antibiotic use may temporarily suppress infections but does not correct the underlying physiology and carries important risks, including antimicrobial resistance, microbiome disruption, and medication side effects.
For this reason, current clinical guidelines from the American College of Urology recommend vaginal estrogen as a FIRST-LINE preventive strategy for recurrent UTIs in menopausal women.
Vaginal estrogen is the SAFEST proven form of hormone replacement therapy and can be started at any time in perimenopause and beyond — and used for life. Very few contraindications for use exist making it easy to introduce and use for the prevention of UTIs, vaginal dryness, bladder incontinence and numerous other issues related to the genitourinary tract.
Bonus: bioidentical estrogen vaginal suppositories/cream is available to our patients WITHOUT a prescription and costs about $10 a month. Ladies, stop thinking intervention and start thinking prevention. 🩷
