Was able to look at 10 hives today (before the girl hawkeye game). They were all at different stages as far as the amount of brood. I even spotted a few drone cells already

Was able to make a quick inspection of three hives. 63 degrees, but it was windy

The girls were out today in full force looking for food/potein. Egg cartons have a pollen sub and the yellow bucket has cracked corn in it. Plus got my first sting of 2024.

Took advantage of the 63 degree temp to clean out the top of a 5 frame NUC I am overwintering and look who showed up for her last meal.

January 4-6, Kim, her sister Dawn, myself and my brother Mike attended the National Honey Bee Expo in Louisville, KY, along with 3,000+ beekeepers. Other then Premier Bee Product out of Sioux Falls we were the only SD residents in attendance. There were 20 breakout classes of various beekeeping topics and a 80,000 sf trade show that had something for everyone. Time to start planning for next year.

With the weather temperatures heading towards more normal levels I was out in the bee yards to check hive weight and resources. Those hives that were light were given sugar brick supplements to help the bees along. Didn't take long for the bees to find the sugar.

Not that the snow was unexpected, it was the amount that we received. Had to go around and make sure the entrances were open. Had a few that I had to clean the snow from. And like that the girls are flying.

Quick video of the bees feeding on dry pollen sub. December 19, 2023, 37 degrees, 8:30 am. There's a water bucket just to the left not seen that they are using. Just no natural resources available this time of year.

Took advantage of the warm weather this morning and gave the girls a mite treatment while they were not clustered. My voice is muffled because when using oxalic acid v***r you need a respirator. Oxalic acid doesn't harm the bees but will kill the mites that are not under the wax cappings of the brood.

Had a few minutes this morning so I slid a camera through the vent on one of my hives to see what the girls were doing at 32 degrees. It appears they are clustered down between the frame as they should be.
