I always used to worry when I put out openings for my yoga class.
Not because people wouldn’t attend, but because I would say, “Spots fill up.” I would cringe because I was afraid of being judged for tooting my own horn.
But… no more.
I’m about to toot my own horn, so pay attention, because this is what it looks like, and this is my reality.
My classes fill because:
There is no yoga-appropriate uniform that needs to be worn. We come in T-shirts and sweatpants.
I don’t teach my students to be on the cover of Yoga Journal. I teach my students how to stay in their bodies.
I teach how to recognize what self-care looks like.
I teach how to have gratitude.
You see, I’m more interested in my students being able to use yoga techniques outside of the classroom, not just on the mat, and not just with me.
Yoga is a practice, not a class and it is about flexibility of mind and body.
The people who come to me are not originally stretchy. In fact, usually they’re scared to move their body, because the majority of my class comes with some type of fear or injury.
And what they find in my class is more than they even expected:
They find their edge where they feel confidence instead of fear when moving their body.
They learn how to connect with their body.
They find peace.
They find community they maybe didn’t expect.
I dont rush poses. I don’t push. I don’t adjust. I help them move just the way they are snd I help them safely find that edge for growth.(safely)
I teach off the mat. I never come in with a pre-planned program on how class will run.
I use my intuition and my observation skills to know what my students need.
I've never had anyone leave class saying they didn’t get what they needed from it that night.
I also have an open-door policy where my students can contact me anytime with a question about how they’re feeling in their body during or after a practice.
When I come to yoga class, I bring my nursing knowledge (which runs deeper than the average yogi) I bring understanding, listening, emotional intelligence, and safety.
I genuinely care about every person in my class.
Every single person who comes into my yoga community develops a friendly kind of caring for each other. They show genuine concern and hold space for one another just by listening and if that was the only thing they got out of my yoga class, I would be proud to have created a space where that can actually happen.
My yoga classes fill quickly. Period.
People find me through the internet or through word of mouth. On that first call I have with every single person who signs up, the reaction is almost always the same:
“I can’t wait.”
And one more thing…
When people come to my class, they stay. Not just for one six-week session, but continuously. They keep coming back.
People leave my class for one of two reasons:
1) Their job schedule changed.
2) They moved out of the area.
And I believe that says something.
So when I say, "this class fills fast", it’s not because I’m tooting my own horn. It’s because it does.
So, if there’s an opening and you see it...move.
Because once those spots fill up, they tend to make a home with me.
🎺 Toot, Toot! 😉
