A mand is a type of communication where a child requests what they want or need — like asking for a toy, snack, or help. Teaching mands is one of the most powerful ways to give children control over their environment and strengthen meaningful communication.

ABCs of ABA: L is for Latency ⏱️

Latency is the time between when an instruction is given and when the behavior begins. For example, if a therapist says, “Clap your hands,” and the child claps after 3 seconds, that’s a latency of 3 seconds. Measuring latency helps us understand how quickly a child responds, so we can tailor supports and encourage faster, more independent responses over time.

ABCs of ABA: I is for Imitation 👀 Imitation is when a child copies another person’s actions, sounds, or words.

✅ Example: A therapist claps, and the child claps too.
