ABCs of ABA: P is for Prompting 🧩

Prompting is when a therapist provides a cue or assistance to help a child complete a skill successfully. Prompts can be verbal, visual, gestural, or physical β€” and they’re always designed to promote independence over time. For example, a therapist may model a word or gently guide a hand to complete a task, then fade that support as the child learns.

Prompting helps children build confidence, reduce frustration, and experience success step by step.

ABCs of ABA: O is for Overcorrection 🧩

Overcorrection is a teaching strategy where a child practices the correct behavior several times after a mistake. It’s not a punishment β€” it’s about learning responsibility and reinforcing the right actions.

Example: If a child accidentally spills water, they may be guided to clean it up and practice placing the cup properly. This teaches care, responsibility, and attention to detail.

Both Discrete Trial Training (DTT) and Naturalistic Teaching are effective ABA methods β€” but they serve different purposes.

πŸ“˜ DTT: Structured, repetitive learning with clear instructions and feedback.
🌿 Naturalistic Teaching: Learning that happens in everyday settings through play and interaction.

Together, they build a strong balance of structure and spontaneity.

ABCs of ABA: N is for Natural Environment Teaching 🌱

NET means teaching skills during naturally occurring activities rather than structured sessions. For example, if a child asks for a snack, that’s an opportunity to practice requesting, labeling, and following directions β€” all in the moment! NET helps children apply skills in real-world settings, making learning meaningful and lasting.

πŸ’‘ Reinforcement doesn’t just happen in therapy β€” it starts at home. Reinforcement means rewarding positive behaviors to increase how often they happen. Whether it’s verbal praise, a high-five, or a favorite activity, consistent reinforcement helps children learn what behaviors bring positive outcomes.

Learn simple ways to use reinforcement at home in our latest blog post: https://loom.ly/LIgLCD0

ABCs of ABA: L is for Latency ⏱️

Latency is the time between when an instruction is given and when the behavior begins. For example, if a therapist says, β€œClap your hands,” and the child claps after 3 seconds, that’s a latency of 3 seconds. Measuring latency helps us understand how quickly a child responds, so we can tailor supports and encourage faster, more independent responses over time.
