So many of the families I work with have support for their children at school to insure they have equal access to an education. The current situation is adding more emotional stress due to the extremely difficult burden of home schooling their children. They must work from home, schedule shopping, and provide reassurance for their children during a pandemic. Teachers have training to teach children and parents should not be made to feel they are failing their children if they don’t meet this impossible level of home schooling. This is a crisis and I fear for the long term consequences for the emotional health of these families. Many districts are having a balanced approach to this, but sadly so many others are not. Stressed out kids trying to keep up and stressed out parents trying to teach without the necessary training is not the answer. There will be more stressed out parents who refuse to continue this experiment of home schooling. The long term effects of this do not have to be made worse by adding more stress.
Moms and dads are focusing on the rewards, rather than the risks, of refusing to participate.
