Universal Door Meditation Center invites you to join the special Awakened meditation retreat every Sunday, guided by Awakened Zen Master Thich Dieu Thien to awaken the inherent Buddha Nature within each person and directly experience the Ultimate Truth.

ONE DAY AWAKENING RETREAT at Universal Door Meditation Center...

It was a very meaningful retreat, revealing the power of Awakened in Awakened Zen Master Thich Dieu Thien in all directions.
The Awakened One opened the retreat with the words:

Using a mirror and some fine sand as the Awakened Skillful Means, Awakened Zen Master Thich Dieu Thien awakened everyone in the room to instantly realize the profound truth about ourselves: Because we don’t know who we truly are (the mirror), we absorb the information from the society, believing it as us, our mirror becomes covered (the sand), living with duality or good/bad, right/wrong, causing suffering for ourselves and others.

Through the tangible story of student Tinh Chon Tanh, the Awakened One opened for us how when one person in a family is real and connects to the Awakened Five Natures of the Awakened One, the light from that one person will spread to their immediate family, and beyond, spreading to the whole world. From one or two people transforming… the impact radiates outward.

It’s the light that is much needed in the chaotic world today… The light of hope, wisdom, and true love. There was a powerful feeling in the room — a sense of Spring, of new beginnings, of deep transformation. Not just small change… but a paradigm shift.

Every retreat participant, whether brand new or seasoned to meditation, was very open and willing, wholeheartedly participating in eating meditation, barefoot walking meditation, and more, as they continued to discover the Clear Mind, and liberating the false mind.

The retreat opened the doorway of restless questioning for all of us:

Awakened living is beginning to blossom everywhere within the Pho Mon - Suoi Tu Sangha.

𝐒𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝 – 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐦𝐢𝐝𝐬𝐭 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞

Dear Sangha,

We have just heard the firecrackers resounding outside.
But if within the mind the ego remains intact,
then sorrow is only temporarily silenced — not truly ended.

The world today does not lack power.
It does not lack voices.
It does not lack ambition.

What the world lacks
are human beings
who dare to turn back and conquer themselves.

A great ego arising
can shake a society.
A mind free of ego
can calm the human world.

We often wish for world peace.
But peace is not born
from one side defeating another.
Peace is born
when a person no longer feels the need to win.

If in this New Year, each of us
dares to release one moment of pride,
dares to let go of one fixed viewpoint,
dares to relinquish even once, the urge to compete —

Then in that very instant,
A Buddha is born.

Not a Buddha descending from the sky,
But a Buddha arising where the mind is free from ego-clinging.

We do not need more violence in any form.
We need more Awakened Light.

When one awakened person appears,
the world gains a field of peace.
When many dare to let go of ego,
division naturally decreases.

Therefore, on this first day of the New Year,
Do not merely pray for a peaceful year.
Make this vow instead:

Release one deluded thought.
Guard one clear mind.
Live one life, not for the ego.

Then,
The firecrackers of Spring will not only resound outside —
They will explode within the mind.
The Light of the Way will not be mere words —
It will radiate in the midst of life.

Spring truly begins
where there is no one left to defend.

THE DEATHLESS NEW YEAR’S EVE

The bell has just sounded… heaven and earth tremble.
New Year’s fireworks blaze across the empty sky.
People rejoice to welcome another year arriving —
Yet who sees they are still standing in the circle?

The circle of birth and death, turning without rest.
The ego quickly puts on its new spring robe.
So many years we change calendars, change the numbers —
But the “self” remains defiant, unyielding!

Apricot blossoms still shine by the doorstep.
Firecrackers still echo through the human realm.
But if the mind still clings in craving and grasping,
Spring is only a splendid outer garment.

Let me ask directly — you who practice tonight:
Have you ever truly let go of self-clinging?
Or do you only vow in moments of emotion,
Then by morning… the “me” remains the same?

New Year’s Eve is not the turning of time,
Not in the sound of fireworks filling the sky.
It is where a single deluded thought comes to rest —
No longer believing the false grasping as “I.”

In the very instant you no longer chase gain and loss,
The three realms fall away beneath your feet.
Nothing added, nothing removed — no more seeking —
The Unborn Spring awakens within the mind.

If tonight you still embrace the ego,
Then the New Year is nothing but the old again.
If tonight you dare to release one single thought,
Heaven and earth transform instantly.

Do not pray for blessings for the coming year.
Do not pray for peace within impermanence.
Simply dare to let go of the ego —
Spring is already arriving in all ten directions.

Fireworks may fade after a moment.
Flowers may fall before the dawn.
But once the Unborn shines forth,
Spring of a thousand years abides within you.

The bell sounds again — none can hold it.
Time falls through this fragile world.
Only the one who dares to let the ego die
Truly steps into the Deathless Spring.
