Not all compounding is created equal.
• 503A pharmacies compound individually for a specific patient prescription.
• 503B pharmacies operate under FDA oversight with higher-level quality standards, batch testing, and more rigorous sterility requirements.
Both have a role—but knowing which one made your medication helps you understand safety, consistency, and why certain products cost what they do.

🔹 Generic vs Brand-Name Drugs
Yes—generics contain the same active ingredient, but the fillers, release mechanisms, absorption, and tolerances can differ. For many patients that’s fine… but for hormones, thyroid meds, and certain precision-dose therapies, small differences can change how you feel.

Why do we prefer transdermal estrogen and testosterone for hormone therapy?

Because when taken orally, both hormones go through first-pass metabolism in the liver, which increases clotting factors and can raise clot risk which increases risk of stroke and blood clots.

✨ Transdermal and subcutaneous forms bypass the liver
✨ They avoid the rise in clotting factors and minimize the risk of stroke or clots
✨ They provide steadier, more physiologic hormone levels
✨ They’re safer long-term — even in women with low baseline risk

This is why Dr. Blonder and Dr. Crowe only prescribe transdermal estradiol and non-oral testosterone formulations in our practice.
