Why migraines often get worse before menopause

If you’ve never had migraines before or yours suddenly feel more intense, more frequent, or more unpredictable, there is a real reason for that.

In perimenopause (the years leading up to menopause), your hormones do not slowly fade out.
They swing.

Estrogen can rise high one week and crash the next. These rapid ups and downs are one of the strongest triggers for migraines in women. In fact, most migraines in midlife are not random. They are responding to these hormone shifts.

That is why many women in their late 30s and 40s say,
“I suddenly started getting migraines,”
or
“My old migraines became unbearable.”

Nothing is wrong with you.
Your nervous system is reacting to hormonal instability.

The good news?
When we understand the hormone pattern behind your migraines, we can often treat them more effectively, sometimes with the right type of hormone support and sometimes with a combination of hormone and neurology care.

You deserve relief, not just painkillers.

Continuing the powerful conversation with psychologist Dr. Teresa Anderson, Dr. Rebecca Berens reflects on how her own experiences with trauma have made her a more attentive and compassionate physician.

Surviving an abusive relationship in medical school and navigating long-term recovery from an eating disorder gave her firsthand insight into post-traumatic stress and the subtle red flags that patients may not yet recognize or feel safe enough to voice.

These lived experiences allow her to sense when someone is carrying something heavy and to offer the gentle, non-judgmental space they need to finally open up.

Thank you, Dr. Teresa Anderson, for this vulnerable and important discussion on trauma-informed care. This is Part 3 of a special 4-part series we’re sharing this week.

Dr. Rebecca Berens is a board-certified family medicine physician practicing in Sugar Land, Texas.

Continuing the heartfelt conversation with psychologist Dr. Teresa Anderson, Dr. Rebecca Berens opens up about her own path to healing.

She shares that her eating disorder began in college, with true recovery taking years—well into residency. Later, during medical school, she survived an abusive relationship that nearly cost her life. These experiences brought deep understanding of post-traumatic stress and the subtle signs that someone may be struggling in silence.

Today, those lived experiences help her recognize when patients need a safe space to share—and offer the compassion they deserve.

This is Part 2 of a special 4-part series we’re sharing this week.

The holidays are over, but the cravings might still be here and that’s completely normal.

Craving carbs or certain foods after weeks of holiday eating is not a failure. It’s your body telling you it needs fuel, stability, and care. Diet culture may tell you to “detox” or “cut carbs” but your body is asking for something very different, gentleness, balance, and nourishment.

In this post, we break down why cravings happen, why restriction often backfires, and how to approach your health in January without shame or punishment.

Your body doesn’t need a reset. It needs support. 💛

Busy seasons have a way of convincing us that our needs can wait.
That rest can be postponed.
That caring for ourselves is something we should feel guilty about.

It is not.

Taking care of your health does not take away from anyone else. It allows you to show up with more steadiness, energy, and clarity, especially during demanding times of life.

Even small acts of care count. A pause. A breath. A meal. A night of rest.

You are allowed to take care of yourself without guilt, even during busy seasons of life.

Follow for more compassionate, evidence based guidance through midlife health, perimenopause, and menopause.

Menopause can change how your body responds to food, stress, sleep, and routine. During the holidays, those changes often feel even louder.

If weight feels harder to manage right now, it does not mean you are failing or doing something wrong. Hormonal shifts, disrupted sleep, and added stress all play a role, especially during perimenopause and menopause.

This season is not about strict rules or fixing your body. It is about understanding what is happening and offering yourself more support, not less.

Wrapping up our series on The Muslim S*x Podcast with Dr. Sadaf Lodhi, Dr. Rebecca Berens discusses the connection between eating disorders, mental health, and intimacy.

While conditions like anxiety, depression, or bipolar disorder can increase risk, eating disorders can affect anyone. Many people experience both due to shared underlying factors.

Eating disorders often deeply impact intimacy. Struggles with body image make vulnerability difficult, and a history of trauma (sexual, physical, family-related, or other) can keep the body in a stressed state, making relaxation and connection challenging.

Thank you, Dr. Sadaf Lodhi, for this compassionate and insightful conversation on body image, health, and healing.

This is Part 3 of a 3-part series this week.
