To those of you that don’t know the details yet, my right leg was amputated about five inches below the knee. I’ve been back home for a few days now. It’s so good to be home and back in my own bed!! I’ve been sleeping well. The pain isn’t as bad as you would expect. There is no sharp, stabbing pain. It’s more like a continuous tight squeeze. It lessens a little every day.
It will be a couple of months before I can even be fitted for a prosthetic leg. I must be fully healed with no swelling to make sure it’s a perfect custom fit. Until then I’m getting around the house with my walker. I’m really looking forward to getting my prosthetic! I’ve already been googling different models and learning about how they work.
I have a few who have reached out worried I’m going to fall into a deep depression. I’m actually really, really good!! Sure, I cried a few times in the hospital, and I puked the very first time I saw my nub, but I’m actually pretty darn positive about the whole thing. I don’t think people realize what a burden it was dragging my zombie foot around in that big ol’ boot for the past year. I’m glad to be free of it! With a prosthetic I can actually wear matching shoes again!!! Getting upright, stable, and back behind my barber chair is my biggest motivation.
And for the record, I’m not getting one of those flesh-toned rubber Ken doll legs with the fake sculpted toes. I want a terminator leg. Something brushed steel and black. Something that makes kids at the barbershop say “that’s sooooo cool!”
I sincerely want to thank all of you for your heartfelt messages in this trying time. It means so much to me to see such an outpouring of support from old and new friends, family, and more. Your financial contributions are appreciated beyond measure, allowing my wife and I to keep our home in order until I can get back to work. It has allowed me peace of mind so I can focus on healing. No words can express the depth of my gratitude. Thank you so much.
