National Nutrition Month Tip: Manage Diabetes π
Diabetes affects millions of Americans, and many people have it without knowing. Those who receive diabetes self-management education are more likely to control their blood sugar, avoid complications and feel confident managing their condition. Support from healthcare providers, family and community resources plays an important role in long-term success.
Cynthia Chantlin, CDCES, LDN, RDN, with WCCH shares five tips inspired by the Glucose Goddess approach:
β’ Eat foods in the right order: Start with fiber-rich vegetables, then protein and healthy fats and eat carbohydrates last to reduce blood sugar spikes.
β’ "Clothe your carbs": Pair carbs with protein, fat or fiber (like Greek yogurt or nuts with fruit) to slow digestion and flatten glucose curves.
β’ Space meals every 4β6 hours: Add a snack if needed to help keep blood sugar levels stable.
β’ Move after eating: Light activity for 10 minutes, like walking, can help lower post-meal blood sugar.
β’ Choose a balanced breakfast: Focus on protein, fiber and healthy fats instead of high-sugar options.
Small changes can make a big impact.
