The world is hurting, and in moments like this we all cry out: why? Why would someone who seemed so normal commit such a heartbreaking, senseless act?
At the root, it reminds us of a deeper truth, wounds that go unhealed do not simply disappear. Left unattended, they can grow into isolation, anger, and even destruction. God designed our minds and hearts to need connection, encouragement, and truth. But when we isolate ourselves and only feed on negativity, the mind begins to change. If we allow dark ideas to repeat in our thoughts, they can take root. With what’s called confirmation bias, we begin searching only for information that validates those thoughts. The internet, though an incredible tool, can fuel this, because for any idea, no matter how destructive, there is endless content to make it feel real.
But this isn’t how God created us to live. He designed us to need one another. “It is not good for man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18). He calls us to live in community, to bear one another’s burdens, to sharpen one another, and to lift each other up in love. When we divide into extremes, when we choose sides and refuse to listen, we rob ourselves of the very gift God gave us for health and happiness: each other.
True wisdom doesn’t come from shutting out voices we disagree with. It comes from humility, recognizing that every person carries a piece of truth and value, because every person is made in the image of God. Division is the enemy’s tool. Unity, understanding, and compassion are God’s design.
If we want to heal as individuals and as a nation, we must step back from extremes and remember who we are in Christ. We are one body with many parts (1 Corinthians 12). We are called to love one another, to seek peace, and to walk in truth. Healing will not come from doubling down on hatred or isolation, but by leaning into God’s heart, choosing love, choosing compassion, and choosing to see one another as He sees us.
Now, more than ever, may we turn back to Him. Only in His presence will our wounds be healed, our divisions be bridged, and our hearts find peace.
