Our very own Environmental Services Sanitarian, Arran Adams, was awarded the 2025 Innovation Award by the West Virginia Association of Local Health Departments (WVALHD)!
The Innovation Award recognizes a Public Health group which has enhanced delivery of a public health service or identified and met a public health need in a unique and/or new way.
While working directly with a local business owner to permit their current location as well as to open a new establishment, Arran identified translational gaps and language barriers that impacted the implementation of food code that were impacting their current establishment as well as delaying opening of their new business. In response, he developed Basic Cooking Safety Tips (in Spanish) and full communications in Spanish to facilitate correction of violations and build culturally sensitive partnerships to ensure safe and sanitary operations for our community. This led to an expedited, smoother, and safer upstart and compliance with the existing establishment. When asked to comment on his award, Arran responded “A genuine effort to understand others opens doors we didn’t know were there”.

"We are thrilled to recognize Mr. Adams’ recognition and receipt of the 2025 WVALHD Innovation Award,” said Dr. Anita Stewart, Nicholas County Health Department Health Officer. “His self-prompted efforts of cultural competency, kindness, and partnership embody the true innovation and commitment to our community we strive for in local public health”.
