💧 World Breastfeeding Week 💧

"When we trust the makers of baby formula more than we do our own ability to nourish our babies, we lose a chance to claim an aspect of our power as women. Thinking that baby formula is as good as breastmilk is believing that 30 years of technology is superior to 3 MILLION years of natures evolution". -Christine Northup, MD

Breastfeeding is natural, but it is NOT easy. This week and during the month of August we salute women across the globe for the countless amount of hours, all of the tears, frustration and sheer determination to breastfeed their babies in a world that makes it easy to give up and encourages the use of formula.

According to WHO, only 12.1% of women in the world are fully breastfeeding their infants and 21.9% of women are partially breastfeeding their infants. - data collected from 2020

THIS.IS.PATHETIC!

And I am here to say, IT IS NOT THE WOMENS FAULT! Women are drastically lacking the support and education needed for a successful breastfeeding relationship. How can we do better?

💧 Educate women on the importance of breastmilk and how it benefits their health and their baby's health. Formula will NEVER be as good as mother's milk.
💧 Educate families on the importance of limiting birth interventions and cultivating a birth that is full of oxytocin. Epidurals & Pitocin affect your breastfeeding relationship. A Cesarean birth affects your breastfeeding relationship. Birth trauma affects your breastfeeding relationship.
💧 Support mother-baby attachment from the very moment baby is born. Immediate and uninterrupted skin to skin following delivery and continuous skin to skin for the first 2-4+ weeks. Babies belong on mothers chest SKIN TO SKIN nursing around the clock.
💧 Educate women on normal breastfeeding behaviors. Encourage women to hire an out of hospital lactation consultant BEFORE there are obstacles to tackle. Asses latch, oral restrictions and milk supply before its too late.
💧 Support women and hold space for their frustrations. This is not easy, but it gets easier. Remind them that they are not alone.
💧 Before offering to supplement with formula, offer to consider donor breast milk. Women across the globe are donating their extra milk to women in need.

These are just a few of many surface level issues women are facing. At the end of the day, every baby needs to be fed and I truly have deep empathy for those who have tried and were unsuccessful, but for the love of all children....stop telling women formula is better than breast milk.

I see this A LOT.

‘If you want to increase your supply,....’
👉🏻drink that pink drink from Starbucks
👉🏻eat oatmeal for breakfast
👉🏻drink a Body Armour everyday

🛑I’m going to stop right there🛑

Mamas....no.
Just stop.

Yes, there are such things as galactagogues..aka..substances said to increase milk supply.

And, they might give you a little boost….temporarily.

But, it won’t last.

You know the best way to increase and/ or maintain your supply?

Nurse your baby on demand.
Pump more frequently if you’re a pumping mama.

I’ve nursed 4 babies into toddlerhood, and in those early days, nursing is the answer to EVERYTHING.

Baby fusses?
Nurse them
They’re tired?
Nurse them
Diaper changed and they’re still upset?
Nurse them
They woke up from their nap and they’re crying?
Nurse them
They’re nervous, because you’re somewhere unfamiliar?
Nurse them
They’re nervous, because there are new people?
Nurse them

Unapologetically and unashamedly, nurse your babies.

If you’re a pumping mama…pump more often. Not necessarily for longer periods of time. Just. More. Often.

Demand = supply
Frequency is key👌🏻

That is how you establish and maintain a steady supply.

Not pink drinks and oatmeal.

Here’s why I don’t use the word contraction - it’s only part of the story. The sensations you feel during labor that allow your baby to pass thru the birth canal, thru your pelvis, and into this world are the muscles of your uterus tightening + releasing.

Hold your fist out, tighten it into a ball, and then release, allowing the muscles of your hand to relax completely - that is a ‘contraction’.

Contracting is only half the story. And, in a way, it’s the easier half because your body contracts on its own - it’s the relaxation half that most of us find it hard to tap into. When in pain our instinct is to tighten up, squeeze, hold our breath and scrunch our face and clench our jaw - but, during labor, it is being asked of us to do the opposite: breathe deeply, relax our face, jaw, and tongue, and bring release to our pelvic muscles thru movement and vibration. To relax thru pain is not instinctual, and something that I encourage all mamas to practice.

Rather than focusing on contracting what else can we call them? Waves, surges, and rushes are words that more accurately describe the push and pull of labor, and encourage mama to ebb and flow with the sensation. To close her eyes, feel the rise, breathe thru the build, sway and moan with the peak, and then gently and lovingly move thru the release.

Although changing the name of the experience will not take the pain of labor away - I do believe it helps put mama in the right frame of mind to navigate each rush (my ‘word’ of choice). And, if you’ve labored before, you know that frame of mind is an essential piece of the puzzle for bringing baby earthside!
