This is beyond important, parents. I’m hearing one too many “he/she may have ADHD” comments in the school setting. These same kids are falling asleep quite often during the school day, mouth breathing, and they have behavioral issues. Let’s get to the root cause together.

Many children labelled with ADHD may actually be struggling with sleep disordered breathing caused by:
• Enlarged tonsils or adenoids
• Nasal obstruction or allergies
• Poor oral posture or airway issues

Sleep disruption affects:
• Attention and concentration
• Behaviour and emotional regulation
• Learning and memory

Treat the airway first, and sometimes the “behaviour problem” disappears.

💡 Could some ADHD diagnoses actually be undiagnosed sleep problems?

This is way too important not to share. As an SLP with myofunctional therapy training, I see far too many educators and medical providers slap a “bandaid” on symptoms, whether it’s pulling teeth or recommending/giving medication. Airway health is so important. Be sure to seek a provider who looks at one’s airway before anything else.

My daughter was diagnosed with ADHD in the 4th grade—and no one looked at her airway. Not even me…

Because we didn’t learn this in dental school.

It wasn’t until she was in her early 20s that I stumbled into the world of dental sleep medicine—and everything changed. I found the AADSM (American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine), and I realized how many kids are being misdiagnosed… or, worse, medicated for symptoms that could be rooted in something as simple—and profound—as not getting breathing properly while they sleep.

To be clear:
We love and fully embrace her neurodivergence. It’s her superpower.

But I still wish I had known then what I know now—because I would have treated her differently.

I would have taken her to a different kind of orthodontist.

Not one who pulls teeth to make a smile look straight.

But one who protects and expands the airway—the kind of provider my grandson sees today. The kind of provider you’ll find on

Because here’s the truth:
✨ Some kids don’t need medication.
✨ They need more oxygen.
✨ They need their jaws to grow forward—not be restricted.
✨ They need sleep that actually restores their brains.

We cannot keep medicating symptoms while ignoring root causes.

Airway issues can mimic ADHD. And medicating without screening for them is not just outdated—it’s malpractice.

Airway first. Always.

The roof of the mouth, known as the palate, is directly connected to the nasal passages. When the palate is narrow, it can restrict airflow and create several issues. Here’s how it can impact breathing and health:

1. **Airflow Restriction**: A narrow palate can lead to a smaller nasal cavity, which makes it harder for air to flow freely in and out through the nose. This can result in nasal congestion and difficulty nasal breathing.

2. **Mouth Breathing**: If airflow through the nose is obstructed due to a narrow palate, children may resort to mouth breathing. This can lead to dry mouth, dental problems, and even affect speech development.

3. **Sleep Quality**: Poor airflow can also impact sleep. Children with a narrow palate may be more prone to sleep apnea or restless sleep, leading to fatigue and difficulties in concentration during the day.

4. **Facial Development**: Over time, a narrow palate can contribute to changes in facial structure, potentially leading to issues like malocclusion (misalignment of teeth) and other orthodontic concerns.

5. **Overall Health**: Since effective nasal breathing plays a crucial role in filtering, humidifying, and warming the air we breathe, any obstruction can affect overall respiratory health and well-being.

➡️ narrow palate -> low tongue posture

➡️ low tongue posture ->mouth breathing during critical growth periods -> maldevelopment of the jaw -> increase in the mandible plane angle (longer face), a higher palatal plane (affects upper airways), and narrowing of both upper and lower arches->malocclusion ->sleep disordered breathing

There are several influences which can affect facial growth and development.

One of the most common one in children is caused by a compromised airway - The inability to breathe properly through the nose.

Has your pediatrician said to “Wait X more months” about your child’s speech and language development? If so, this is for you. Take your child to see an SLP if you have concerns. The earlier we can intervene, the better the outcome.
