🌙 Home care for croup

If your child wakes up with a barking cough or trouble breathing, stay calm — crying can make it worse.

🌡️ If they have a fever (100.4°F or higher), treat it with acetaminophen or ibuprofen (for children over 6 months) and encourage fluids.

💨 Steam or cool night air may bring comfort, but there’s no proof they help breathing.

📞 Call your child’s provider or 911 if they:

Have noisy breathing that’s getting worse

Can’t speak or catch their breath

Have bluish lips or nails

Drool or struggle to swallow

Have stridor even when resting

💊 Doctors may use steroid or epinephrine treatments to reduce swelling if symptoms are severe.

Antibiotics and cough syrups don’t help — croup is almost always caused by a virus.
