What does the word "dyslexia" mean to you? If phrases like "reading backwards" or words like "rare" come to mind, then let's DEBUNK Dyslexia together! ❌
👍Dyslexia IS a highly complex neurological difference that affects approximately 20% of students in the US today. It derives from difficulties with understanding and manipulating the sound system in our language. There are different severities and possible co-morbid conditions such as ADHD, visual processing disorder, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia.
👎Dyslexia is NOT an indicator of someone's intellectual abilities, nor is it due to improper instruction. Dyslexia cannot be outgrown or "cured," but appropriate identification along with therapeutic intervention can help the reader RISE above the challenges. ☀

The Umbrella by Beth Ferry and Tom Lichtenheld was the perfect book as we wrapped up our final week of the Language and Literacy Summer Intensives! We practiced all of our speech-sound, phonological, oral language, writing, and pre-reading skills as we read about one little girl whose perseverance and generosity helped to spread happiness like SUNSHINE! ☀️

When Week 3 of the Language and Literacy Summer Intensive is filled with nothing but silly boys, you skip the summer theme and go for the 1000s of Disgusting facts! P**p, rodents, mysterious bones, and smells galore helped us practice our oral language, phonological awareness, writing skills, and speech-sounds!
