We’ve received around 13 inches of snow, and it’s still coming down.
Road conditions are poor, and travel is strongly discouraged unless absolutely necessary.

A big thank you to Justin Meeks for clearing our slip. We truly appreciate the help!

Road conditions are deteriorating, this is US-50 at Salukis Road, and this is a main thoroughfare. Secondary and side streets are, as you can imagine, even worse.

Please use an abundance of caution if you must travel tonight.

Did you know our dispatch center has a non-emergency number?

It still goes straight to dispatch. You still get help.
You just don’t tie up the 911 line for something that isn’t actively life-threatening.
If it can wait a few minutes without someone getting hurt, this is the number to call:

(618) 945-3322

Fire
• Smell of smoke with no visible fire
• Alarm system issues
• Power lines down but not arcing/burning
• Controlled burn questions
• Water leaks/hydrant issues

EMS
• lift assists
• Sick person who is stable
• Advice on whether an ambulance is needed

The rule of thumb:
If it can wait a few minutes without someone getting hurt — non-emergency.
If waiting could make things worse — 911.

Not to cause panic or fearmonger, but we are looking at the potential for a significant winter storm, named Fern.

Sumner City Hall will be open as a warming center.
If we experience prolonged power outages, the Sumner and Chauncey Fire Stations will also open to the public.

Please understand this storm may impact road conditions and delay response times for all first responders.
Use good judgment when requesting EMS services. Minor issues such as headaches, cramps, or a runny nose (flu like symptoms) can likely wait until conditions improve. However, do not delay calling for serious concerns such as chest pain, broken limbs, breathing difficulties, or any life-threatening emergency.

Stay safe, check on your neighbors, and prepare ahead of time.

Winter Storm Approaching Southern Illinois!

The National Weather Service is tracking a significant winter weather system moving into our region this weekend (January 24–26, 2026), bringing the potential for heavy snow, bitterly cold temperatures, and hazardous travel conditions across southern Illinois, including Sumner and Lawrence County.

What to Expect:
- Possible accumulating snow (amounts still uncertain but could reach several inches in parts of southern IL)
- Dangerously cold wind chills, potentially dropping near or below zero
- Icy roads, reduced visibility, and difficult driving conditions
- Risk of power outages from ice/snow loading on lines

Safety Tips:
- Stay off the roads if possible during heavy snow or ice – only travel if absolutely necessary.
- If you must drive: Slow down, increase following distance, avoid sudden stops/turns, and ensure your vehicle has a full tank of gas, emergency kit (blankets, flashlight, food/water, charger, shovel), and winter tires/chains if available.
- Prepare your home: Stock up on food, water, medications, and batteries. Let faucets drip to prevent frozen pipes. Keep a battery-powered radio for updates.
- Carbon Monoxide danger: Never use generators, grills, or camp stoves indoors or in attached garages – install/test CO detectors.
- Check on neighbors: Especially elderly residents, those with medical needs, or anyone living alone.
- If stranded: Stay with your vehicle, run the engine/heater sparingly with a cracked window, tie a bright cloth to the antenna, and call 911 if in immediate danger.

Monitor updates from official sources:
- National Weather Service (weather.gov) – search for Lawrence County or zip 62466
- Local emergency management
- Christy Fire Protection Dist. social media/page for local updates

Your safety is our priority. Let's look out for one another this winter. If you see downed lines, fire, or medical emergencies, call 911 immediately.

Stay warm. Stay safe. Stay informed.

Monday night was pump and aerial training. This was our first time moving water through 1459 (the snorkel), and when January hands you 50-degree weather, you don’t argue with it.

We’ve seen a few comments about Highway 50 getting wet. Training took place on the south frontage road off US-50, which has a large-line hydrant ideal for this type of operation. That road has little to no traffic, making it a safe environment for firefighters to work without the risk of passing vehicles.

We made every effort to pause operations when traffic passed. Unfortunately, wind doesn’t always respect training plans.

All in all, it was a productive night, valuable hands-on experience, and a great opportunity to train safely and effectively.

Oohhh what a night. 🥳
According to the VFW, a few records were broken, and here’s the truth: you did that. Not us.

Because of your support, we cleared just shy of $6,000 tonight. That’s incredible. Humbling. And honestly more than we deserve. Our 50/50 winner took home just shy of $700!

Thank you for showing up, giving generously, and reminding us why this community is the best. We couldn’t do this without you!

Also thank you to the VFW for having us!
