Empower My Teen Your teen is struggling and you don’t know what to do next. Let’s get your good kid back.

I’ve spent 20 years walking parents through behavioral and mental health challenges: therapeutic placement, case management, after-care, and advocacy. Since 2002, Mary Warren has empowered parents of struggling teens across Washington State and nationwide. A therapeutic and educational consultant and life and parenting coach, her personal journey with two of three of her children spiraling led her

to this rewarding work. With over two decades of experience, Mary's specialty is guiding families of at-risk teens to find a path to healing by finding the right mental health programs for each child's unique needs including wilderness therapy, therapeutic boarding schools, residential treatment and more. There are five words that can make you lose your teen’s attention instantly:

“When I was your age…”

It usually comes from a good place — trying to relate, trying to help.

But most teens don’t hear it that way.

It can feel minimizing… or like you had it worse… and it turns into Charlie Brown — “whaaa whaaaa whaaaa…”

Sometimes staying in their experience, instead of going back to yours, is what keeps them talking.

If things feel hard right now with your teen or young adult…

It doesn’t mean you’ve failed as a parent.

Most of the parents I talk with are doing more than they realize.

They’re having the hard conversations.
Setting limits.
Second-guessing themselves.
Lying awake at night, wondering if they handled something the right way.
Trying the next day again — AGAIN!

They’re showing up — even when it’s exhausting.

Sometimes it’s not about doing more.

It’s about doing something different.

You know that moment—

Your teen says something with attitude, shuts down, or walks away…
And everything in you wants to react.

Correct it.
Call it out.
Say something back.

But what if, just for a moment, you didn’t?

What if you paused and thought:
“Something’s going on underneath this.”

Not to ignore the behavior.
Not to let things slide.

Just to give yourself a second to respond differently.

Because that small pause?
It can change where the conversation goes next.

And over time, it can change how safe your teen feels opening up.

A small shift—

In my work with parents, it’s often the smallest changes that make the biggest difference.

Instead of:
“Why did you do that?”

Try:
“Help me understand what was going on for you.”

And then pause.

Give them a minute to think and respond.

It won’t fix everything, but it can change the tone of the conversation.

World Health Day: A Reminder for Every Parent Still Searching

Today is World Health Day. This year's theme is Stand with Science.
If you have a teenager who's struggling — and you've been Googling at midnight, reading everything, second-guessing yourself — that phrase might feel like it was written for you.

Because the hardest part of this moment isn't finding information. It's knowing which information to trust.

At Empower My Teen, we work with families who are past the point of hoping it gets better on its own. They come to us because they want to know where to go from here.

Every situation is unique, and every path we help you explore is built around where you are right now. Not what sounds reassuring. Not what's easy. What works.

Standing with science means you don't have to figure that out alone.
If your family is in that place right now, we're here. Start with a conversation.

You've tried everything. Therapy. Conversations. Consequences. And something still isn't right.

You're not alone — and you don't have to figure out what's next on your own.

"We tried everything, but it came to the point where we had to get our 16-year-old daughter the help she needed. Mary was spot on! She gave us several options that fit our daughter's needs and then helped us narrow those down." ~ MJK

For 20 years, Mary Warren has helped parents navigate behavioral and mental health challenges — therapeutic placement, case management, after-care, and advocacy.

Your good kid is still in there.
