Yesterday, DHEC Director Dr. Edward Simmer and Public Health Director Dr. Brannon Traxler joined City of Columbia Government Councilman Edward McDowell Jr., Councilwoman Tina Herbert, and Councilwoman Dr. Aditi Brussells for a event, spotlighting the disease's impact across South Carolina and our nation.

Diabetes is the 8th-leading cause of death in South Carolina. 500,000 adults in South Carolina have diabetes, 120,000 South Carolinians are estimated to have diabetes but are unaware they have it, and another 1.4 million South Carolinians have prediabetes. DHEC encourages residents to talk to their doctor about testing for diabetes and to learn the healthy lifestyle tips that help prevent the disease: https://scdhec.gov/health/diseases-conditions/diabetes.
