Dad used to say, as a doctor, you only have to answer 2 questions. 1. What's wrong with this patient? 2. What are you going to do about it? Understanding the different types of pain in important to help choose the best treatment. So let's talk about them.
Nociceptive pain: Pain from inflammation or tissue damage. This is probably the most common type of pain. This is your body's alarm system. Muscle strain, and arthritis are common examples.
Neuropathic pain: Pain from nerve damage or injury. Sciatica, or pinched nerves are what we commonly see here.
Nociplastic pain: We are seeing this more and more. Think of it as your pain alarm system being turned up too high. Chronic headaches, neck and back pain are common. The pain is real. Often, it requires a combination of treatments.
Can you have more than one type of pain? Absolutely yes. I've often thought that this is chiropractic care's "secret sauce." By treating the spine, it's surrounding soft tissue and relieving pressure from the nerves, we can help several of these pain generators at once.
