" See that tiny pink bead on the lanyard? That is the size of a newborn's tiny tummy. When baby is born, the birthing parent produces colostrum for baby, which is the perfect super food for baby. Colostrum contains just the amount of food baby needs and passes antibodies. It's liquid gold! In this photo, I have a standard 2 ounce bottle of formula that is given to new babies. So, if baby's belly is only the size of a marble, what happens when baby is fed 2 ounces? Well, baby will usually spit up all the extra, which then can be spinned into baby having reflux. When really, baby is just being over fed. This leads to interventions like formula changes, antacid medications, etc. It's important that we give families all the available information so they can make the best decisions for their families."

It might be a blustery day outside but inside it was a perfect day for a sweet little one to make his appearance! What better day to be welcomed into a home full of love than on Valentine’s Day! 🥰

This is a beautifully strong photo!

It’s crazy how many women that have given birth still have no clue what their bodies are capable of during labor/birth.

In this photo you can see just how powerful the human body is. This momma is in the middle of a contraction, water has probably already broken so no more cushion, and you can see her muscles working hard to push baby down. Your body can do this all on its own!

And sitting on the toilet is amazing for labor. Helps with dilation while supporting in all the right places. This is a very natural position for labor, allowing for gravity and your body to work together.

Photographer Meredith Westin captured the exact moment that one laboring mom was seized by a contraction and the result is stunning

World Breastfeeding Week just wrapped up for 2020 but did you know that August is actually World Breastfeeding Awareness Month?

What do all these beautiful momma's have in common? They all have a goal! Be it 6wks, 6mos, 1yr or 5 they are working hard to achieve whatever goal they have set for themselves. And it's harder than you think! Without knowledge and good emotional & physical support, many women give up. There are many resources available out there but they aren't always well known or advertised.

Over the next two weeks I will be sharing photos and personal breastfeeding journeys from several of these women. If you are interested in having your breastfeeding journey captured I would love to assist you.

The American Academy of Pediatrics & the World Health Organization recommend exclusively breastfeeding for the first 6mo of life. After that the AAP recommends breastmilk and solid foods until 12mos and the WHO recommends breastmilk along with foods for a minimum of 2yrs.

So what's the right decision? Only you can decide what is best for you and your baby! Maybe you want to exclusively breastfeed, maybe you want to exclusively pump or maybe you want to offer your baby both breastmilk & formula. The options are many. Whatever you do, find your tribe, those around you who have traveled this path already. Those who can be there to offer support when it gets hard, when you are ready to throw in the towel or someone to just lend an ear to listen and shoulder to cry on.
