Why does one type attract an individual over another? Why do some of us enjoy the size, looks and personality of an Excellent Dane and others would never ever own anything however a Toy Poodle? Every breed has their pros and cons. As a potential young puppy buyer/dog owner, you should understand the traits, both great and bad, of the breed you are thinking about. Numerous pet owners own the type they do because of an impulse buy. Sometimes these exercises fine and other times canine owners learn, too late, that this is not such a wonderful breed (for them) after all. Regretfully, it's the innocent pet dog that suffers when it gets placed in a new home, went back to the breeder or, worst of all, required to the pound! Each type was established with a guaranteed function in mind. Each breed (or most anyhow) have breed-specific health and or character problems of which you need to understand. Some types have coats that require hours of grooming to keep the pet dog in great shape. Some types shed more than others. Some types are very active and hyper while others are quiet and sedentary. Because various breeds have different characteristics, it's a great idea to first specify exactly what traits you want in a pet. Do you want a big dog, medium or little? What is the main purpose of having the canine, other than friendship? Do you desire the pet to hunt with you? Do you want a dog that is a great watchdog? How about children? If you have them, you wish to be guaranteed that the type you pick is going to get along with the kids. And if you do have children, what age are they? A pet dog breed that tends to be really hyper and aggressive would not be an excellent option with really little kids as the canine will likely do harm if it jumps on the kid and play bites. Nevertheless kids in the 10 years and up variety would probably completely delight in an active outgoing buddy. What about grooming? Just how much time are you willing to invest in this task? What about shedding? Some pet dogs do not shed at all and others shed almost constantly. Just how much sound are you ready to tolerate? What about trainability? Some types are infamously difficult to housebreak and/or train while others virtually discipline themselves. If your interest is obedience, seek out those breeds that master the field. If you're a hunter and have visions of fall days in the duck blind with your dependable canine, you wouldn't go out and purchase a Chinese Crested. If you hope to own a pet that will be around for 15 to 16 years, don't buy a big breed.
