Spring hits and suddenly everything feels lighter outside.

Longer days.
Warmer air.
More people out walking.

And yet inside your house?
Feedings.
Laundry.
Interrupted sleep.
Mental load.

Sunlight does not automatically fix exhaustion.

It does not erase anxiety.
It does not replace rest.
It does not reduce the invisible work of postpartum.

If you’ve felt confused about why things still feel hard when the weather is better, there is nothing strange about that.

Postpartum recovery does not follow seasons.
It follows support.

Sometimes what shifts this season is not the weather.
It’s getting help.

If you’re a new parent, you might feel like you should be reading to your newborn.

But when?
How often?
What books?
Is it too early?

April 19–25 is National Library Week, so let’s simplify this!

There is no required number of minutes.
There is no perfect book list.
There is no “start at exactly six weeks” rule.

Newborns benefit from hearing your voice.
That’s it.

You can read:
• One page
• The same page three times
• A board book
• A novel you’re already reading
• The back of a cereal box

It all counts!

Early literacy matters, but not at the cost of your sanity.

If it feels heavy, make it smaller.
If it feels overwhelming, make it simpler.

Connection matters more than perfection.

👉 You can also enroll each child individually in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library for free monthly books mailed to your home.

There is a specific kind of tension that happens when:
Your newborn is crying.
And your autistic child is overwhelmed by the sound.

At the same time.

You are holding sensory overload on one side and basic survival needs on the other.

This is not “just sibling adjustment.”

You might be managing:
• Noise sensitivity
• Disrupted routines
• Meltdowns
• Sleep changes
• Divided attention

Planning matters.

Clear language helps.
Predictable routines help.
Creating a sensory retreat space helps.
Support helps. 🫶🏻

Because this is not a simple transition.
It is a restructuring of your entire household rhythm.

And that deserves more than “they’ll adjust.”

Let’s clear something up during National Library Week!

Reading to your newborn does not have to look like a Pinterest moment.

If your baby:
• Eats the corner of the book
• Slaps the pages
• Makes it 30 seconds before fussing
• Falls asleep halfway through

It still counts!

Newborns are not analyzing plot development.

They are absorbing rhythm.
Tone.
Cadence.
Your voice.

If you want books to show up without thinking about it,
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library mails one to your home each month!
Each child can enroll individually.

Low effort literacy is still literacy!

Reading does not have to be structured or perfect to matter.

During National Library Week, let this be encouragement instead of pressure.

There’s so much focus on getting through birth…
and almost none on what happens after.

Postpartum isn’t something you’re meant to just “handle.”

It’s something you’re meant to be supported through.

If you’ve been wondering what support could look like for you (without committing to anything), come chat with me at the expo.

April is Autism Acceptance Month.

If you are preparing an autistic child for a new baby, your concerns are likely layered.

You might be thinking about:
• How they’ll handle sudden crying
• Sleep disruptions
• Changes in routine
• Increased noise
• Shared parental attention
• Sensory overload
• Regression

These thoughts are NOT you being dramatic.

Autistic children often rely on predictability and sensory stability.
A newborn shifts both.

Acceptance means planning for:
• Clear explanations
• Visual supports
• Sensory safe spaces
• Extra transition time
• Protecting routines where possible

It also means supporting yourself.

Because holding both a newborn and a neurodivergent child’s needs at once is a lot.

❤️Local events like autism walks and sensory friendly programs in your area can also provide connection this month.

💙Share with someone preparing for this transition.

Tax Day feels like the right time to ask:
If sleep deprivation were tax deductible, how much could you claim?

Because newborn exhaustion is not just “a little tired.”

It’s:
• Functioning on broken sleep
• Doing math with half a brain
• Forgetting why you opened your laptop
• Trying to track feeds while your eyes blur

And yet somehow still keeping a tiny human alive.

Sleep deprivation affects memory.
Mood.
Decision making.
Patience.
Literally everything!

This is why consistent rest changes more than energy levels.

Overnight support is not indulgent.
It restores your baseline.

You cannot expense it on your taxes.
But you can stop pretending you are supposed to function at 100% on two hour stretches.

💤Comment how many hours you’ve averaged this week!

These are the words families use after bringing a baby home.

Not because everything was perfect…
but because they didn’t have to do it alone.

Support can look like:
– getting a full night of sleep for the first time in weeks
– having someone calmly walk you through newborn care
– feeling like yourself again, even just a little

I’ll be at the Madison Parent + Baby Expo if you want to talk through what this could look like for you.

Or honestly, just come say hi and put a face to the name.
