Some muscles get all the attention.
The quadratus lumborum usually isn’t one of them… until your low back starts complaining.

Muscle Spotlight: The Quadratus Lumborum (QL)

Where it is
The QL sits deep in your low back. It connects your pelvis to your lower ribs and helps stabilize your spine when you stand, walk, bend, or carry something on one side.

It also assists with breathing by helping control rib movement.

Why it matters
When the QL gets irritated or overworked, it can create a deep, stubborn ache in the low back.
Sometimes it even refers discomfort into the hip or upper glute. That’s why it’s often called the “joker” of low back pain. It can feel like several different problems at once.

Where it gets overloaded
The QL tends to work overtime when:
• You sit for long periods
• One side of your body works harder than the other
• Your hips or core aren’t doing their share of the work
• You’ve been doing more yard work, golf, or activity than usual

How massage can help
Targeted massage can help calm down an irritated QL and reduce the tension around the low back.

Many clients notice that once this muscle relaxes, their back starts moving more comfortably again.

Pain ≠ progress.
And gritting your teeth through a session isn’t some badge of honor 😅

Your body actually responds best when it feels safe, not under attack.

Good massage work:

Let’s make your massage actually feel as good as it’s supposed to 😌

A few simple things that make a BIG difference:

👉 Speak up. Seriously.
Before we even start, tell me what’s going on... tight shoulders, cranky low back, “this one spot has been yelling at me for 3 days”… I want to know.
And if the pressure feels off at any point? Say something. This is your session, not a “just endure it” situation.

👉 Don’t come flying in like it’s a pit stop.
If you rush in stressed, your body doesn’t magically switch to relaxed mode the second you hit the table.
Give yourself a few minutes to arrive, breathe, and mentally shift gears. Your nervous system will thank you.

👉 Maybe skip the pre-massage feast.
A full stomach + laying face down = not the vibe.
A light snack is totally fine, just don’t show up like you just left Thanksgiving dinner 😅

At the end of the day, the best massages happen when your body feels safe, relaxed, and actually listened to.

You don’t need to “be a good client”, you just need to show up as yourself. 🤍

That’s fine… until pain shows up and relaxing doesn’t fix it.

This is the difference.
Results-focused massage means:

• Assessing what’s actually causing the pain
• Knowing when hands-on work helps and when it doesn’t
• Working with limitations, not ignoring them
• Treating you like a moving human, not a spa appointment

If you’re an active adult who wants to keep doing life without fighting your body every morning, this matters.
