What is a post and core build up?
A dentist may use a filling material to restore a largely decayed or broken tooth to a more ideal shape. This filling by itself is called a core.
In some cases the dentist will need to perform a root canal first in which the nerve pulp is cleared out of the tooth. After the root canal, a metal or composite post may be cemented in the open canal space. This provides a stabilizing link between the root and the weakened crown of the tooth. Once the post is secure, a filling material is used to restore the tooth to an ideal shape and this combination is called a post and core buildup.
After the materials have hardened they, and the tooth can be prepared for a crown.
A crown is a restoration that covers a tooth. They are sometimes called caps. Crowns are necessary when a tooth has been damaged significantly and cannot be adequately restored with a filling.
A crown can protect a weak tooth from fracturing; it can also prevent a cracked tooth from further damage. Sometimes they are used to cover discolored or misshapen teeth for a more pleasing smile.
