Caregiver Back Pain Is Not “Just Part of the Job”

More than half of all caregivers report back pain — often from lifting, twisting, or bending while helping loved ones move.
Over time, that pain can lead to muscle strain, poor sleep, and burnout.

Physical therapy can help you:
-Strengthen your core and back muscles
-Learn proper body mechanics for lifting and transfers
-Relieve pain through targeted exercises and stretching
-Prevent future injuries so you can care safely and confidently

Every day, caregivers go above and beyond to keep their loved ones safe — but it’s just as important to protect yourself and them during transfers.

🚫 Avoid pulling or tugging on a person’s arms as it can cause shoulder or skin injuries.
✅ Instead, use a gait belt to provide support and stability while keeping your back and their joints safe.

Small changes in how you transfer your loved one can make a big difference in preventing injury and promoting confidence for both you and them!

Many caregivers experience aches, pains, or even injuries from daily tasks like:

🧍‍♀️ Lifting or transferring loved ones
🏠 Repetitive bending or reaching
🛏️ Helping with mobility or positioning in bed
🚶‍♀️ Long hours on your feet
These activities can lead to back pain, shoulder strain, knee pain, or even chronic fatigue.

Physical therapy can help caregivers:
-Learn safe lifting and transfer techniques
-Strengthen key muscle groups to prevent injury
-Improve posture and endurance
-Manage existing pain so they can keep doing what they love

You take care of others every day — let’s make sure someone’s taking care of you, too.
