This is my son at 6 days old! 🥰 ohhh how little he was and how little I knew about the impacts of this sleepy open mouth posture… 😢
I have learned A LOT about Common vs Normal! Open mouth posture may be COMMON amongst babies & adults, but is NOT normal. Nasal breathing with the mouth CLOSED is the optimal resting mouth posture. This allows for your nose to FILTER, warm, & moisten the air you inhale.
Why is this a big deal? Well, mouth breathing can lead to…
➡️Decreased restorative sleep, sleep disordered breathing, sleep apnea - Snoring can be a red flag for this!
➡️Changes in facial features - structure & function
➡️Eating/Feeding - gagging, choking, refusing foods and self-limiting diets
➡️Nutritional deficits
➡️Impacts speech - mostly articulation of speech
➡️Social emotional issues
➡️Surgical interventions- i.e. adenoids, tonsils, etc.
Why does mouth breathing occur?
⭐️Tongue-tie & low resting tongue posture
⭐️Upper airway resistance (impacting the ability to take air in through the nose such as high-arched palate, deviated septum, small nasal cavity)
⭐️Low muscle tone
⭐️Other neurological impairment
Soooo… mouth breathing is NOT NORMAL, but the good news is that there are therapies that can help!! Typically, the earlier you start treatment for mouth breathing, the more likely you’ll see improvements structure & function, as well as the possibility of decreased costly interventions later in life (orthodontic work, dental work, medications, ,surgeries, etc.)
If this picture looks like your baby, child, partner or yourself, feel free to reach out and I can help find the support you need! Babies are not the only ones with tongue-ties 😉
