30 years ago today was the first day for a new front desk hire. And she is still here! Julie is my office manager, my friend, my little sister, and my work wife. It has been an incredible 30 years with her in the office and I look forward to many more years in the future. At least until I retire! Julie, thank you for your dedication to the office and our patients. Thank you for keeping me on track and centered. Thank you for being my friend.

Today was a special day that reminds me why I love what I do. A former patient and intern returned to the office as a second year dental student. Sabrina is one of over 20 former patients that have worked for me as interns then gone on to dental school. I am very proud of all of them. Sabrina happened to have the photo that we took when her braces were placed almost a decade ago. While I see myself as in the sunset of my career, it’s a pleasure to see the next generation of dentist excited for the future. With the former patients of mine that have ventured into the profession, I can see that the future of dentistry, and the public’s well being, are in capable hands!

I’m back at my alma mater, Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine, to give a presentation to the orthodontic study club. It’s the first time since I stopped teaching 25 years ago that I have talked about orthodontics to dental students and I am very excited!

I love to travel to Washington DC every spring for dentist and student lobby days. We always learn a lot and do some incredible things while in DC to protect the public and make sure oral health is front and center on the minds of our government officials. One thing I don’t always show is just how beautiful Washington DC is. I’ll post more@later about what we accomplished.

As an orthodontist, one of the most rewarding parts of my job is to impact a patient’s life by changing their smile into something they are proud of and helps them become the confident individual they should be. Over the years, I have found something that makes me even more proud of the impact I’ve had on patients. After 30 years in practice, I have had at least 22 former patients go on to dental school. Many of them participated in the Markarian Stars summer internship program we have. This fall, Christine and Rahof will be entering dental school and 5 former patients will be in the process of becoming dentists and colleagues. I couldn’t be more proud of them. Congratulations and good luck!

Last weekend I had the privilege of attending the Ohio Dental Association Leadership Conference in Columbus, Ohio, at the invitation of fellow ADA trustee .chopra. It was an incredible experience to make new friends and visit with many old friends. Thank you ODA for being such gracious hosts!

Finally after too many months away due to the fire in the Spring Valley Dental building, we are back in our O’Fallon office! We are 95+% functional. The rest will be done by next week. Thank you to all of my patients for their patience during this time.
