Stephanie Henson, LCSW

Stephanie Henson, LCSW Counseling Services for Adults, Couples, and Families. Telehealth Sessions Available! I work with adults, ages 18 and older, couples, and families.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a master’s degree in Social Work from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. I have worked in the mental health field for over 12 years and been licensed in clinical practice since 2013. My experiences include working with individuals, families, and veterans who need assistance coping with mental health concerns, such as depression and anxiety, as well as trauma and various life stressors. I utilize a variety of therapeutic approaches and my goal is to support clients as they make effective life changes. My style is genuine and compassionate; I strive to assist my clients in understanding the thoughts and behaviors impacting their lives, as well as how to be more kind to themselves. I work collaboratively with each client to develop and strengthen their coping skills to address the challenges life brings their way. My goal is to make a difference in the lives of others by instilling a sense of hope and empowerment while providing a haven for healing. Always remember, your mental health matters!

Welcome 2023! I want to share this incredibly powerful recovery video made by someone dear to me. Addiction is a disease that deserves treatment and recovery is possible.

“Experiencing addiction does not make you a ‘bad’ person, and relapsing does not mean that you are weak.”

A Reminder That Addiction Is An Illness, Not A Character Flaw

Commentary on Joe Biden's response to his son's substance misuse offers a gross example of how addiction is often viewed as a moral failure.

Tomorrow, August 31st is Overdose Awareness Day.

Please join us by wearing purple (opioid addiction and dependence awareness color) or silver/grey (international overdose awareness color).

Silver: Wearing a silver badge commemorates those lost to drug overdose. Wearing silver sends a message that every person's life is valuable and that stigmatizing people who use drugs needs to stop.

Purple: International Overdose Awareness Day is a global event, held annually on August 31 that aims to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of a drug-related death. It also acknowledges the grief felt by families and friends, remembering those who have met with death or permanent injury as a result of a drug overdose. International Overdose Awareness Day spreads the message that the tragedy of overdose death is preventable.

A nice reminder.

What a powerful reminder that men can and are survivors of interpersonal violence. And it's okay to tell your story and seek help. 💙

Saw this and thought I would share. Why? Because your mental health matters.

DEPRESSION TIPS:
Shower. Not a bath, a shower. Use water as hot or cold as you like. You don’t even need to wash. Just get in under the water and let it run over you for a while. Sit on the floor if you gotta.

Moisturize everything. Use whatever lotion you like. Unscented? Dollar store lotion? Fancy 48 hour lotion that makes you smell like a field of wildflowers? Use whatever you want, and use it all over your entire dermis.

Put on clean, comfortable clothes.

Put on your favorite underwear. Cute black lacy panties? Those ridiculous boxers you bought last christmas with candy cane hearts on the butt? Put them on.

Drink cold water. Use ice. If you want, add some mint or lemon for an extra boost.

Clean something. Doesn’t have to be anything big. Organize one drawer of a desk. Wash five dirty dishes. Do a load of laundry. Scrub the bathroom sink.

Blast music. Listen to something upbeat and dancey and loud, something that’s got lots of energy. Sing to it, dance to it, even if you suck at both.

Make food. Don’t just grab a granola bar to munch. Take the time and make food. Even if it’s ramen. Add something special to it, like a soft boiled egg or some veggies. Prepare food, it tastes way better, and you’ll feel like you accomplished something.

Make something. Write a short story or a poem, draw a picture, color a picture, fold origami, crochet or knit, sculpt something out of clay, anything artistic. Even if you don’t think you’re good at it. Create.

Go outside. Take a walk. Sit in the grass. Look at the clouds. Smell flowers. Put your hands in the dirt and feel the soil against your skin.

Call someone. Call a loved one, a friend, a family member, call a chat service if you have no one else to call. Talk to a stranger on the street. Have a conversation and listen to someone’s voice. If you can’t bring yourself to call, text or email or whatever, just have some social interaction with another person. Even if you don’t say much, listen to them. It helps.

Cuddle your pets if you have them/can cuddle them. Take pictures of them. Talk to them. Tell them how you feel, about your favorite movie, a new game coming out, anything.

May seem small or silly to some, but this list keeps people alive.

*** At your absolute best you won’t be good enough for the wrong people. But at your worst, you’ll still be worth it to the right ones. Remember that. Keep holding on.

*** In case nobody has told you today, you are worth your weight and then some in gold, so be kind to yourself and most of all keep pushing on!!!!

***People don’t fake depression...they fake being ok.
