Our nerve receptors sit just below the epidermis, which is about the width of a sheet of paper. That’s why a paper cut hurts more than a deep gash. The reason acupuncture needles don’t hurt is threefold:

1. Our needles are 1/20 the thickness of a regular doctor’s needle.
2. We stretch the skin to make it taut or use plastic guide tubes which help distract the needle insertion.
3. We quickly insert the needle.

The nerve receptors don’t have time to register the thin needle pushing through. Therefore, no pain!
