In honor of Black History Month, we would love to share a fact that has helped shape the optical industry!
In 1880, Powell Johnson received a patent for the first eye protectors. These glasses were intended for use of furnace men, peddlers, fireman, and others who were exposed to the glare of strong light, as well as those weak of sight. These eye protectors were the beginning of what we now know as safety glasses!
We are so grateful to the Black Americans who helped develop the industry we work in today and the impact they have made on our society!
