What’s happening to the eyes in this picture?

In the left image (Normal Vision), everything is clear and detailed, especially the center of the visual field.

In the right image (Macular Degeneration), the center of vision is dark and blurry, while the outer (peripheral) vision remains clearer.

This happens because:

The macula, a small but critical part of the retina responsible for sharp central vision, becomes damaged.

The macula allows you to see fine details needed for reading, driving, recognizing faces, and seeing clearly straight ahead.

When it deteriorates, the brain receives incomplete information, creating a blurred ,or dark spot in the center of vision.
AMD does not usually cause total blindness, but it can severely affect independence and quality of life.

Macular degeneration often:

Develops slowly

Has few or no symptoms in early stages

Can worsen before a person realizes there’s a problem

With regular comprehensive eye or wellness exams:

Detect AMD early

Monitor progression

Allow treatment to begin before severe vision loss occurs
