Wandering, anger outbursts, and sudden changes in behavior can often be part of Alzheimer’s disease — not signs of “bad behavior,” but of a brain trying to make sense of a confusing world.

At times, these behaviors can become too difficult to manage safely at home or in a traditional care setting. That’s where a Senior Behavioral Health Unit can help.

Our team provides a safe, structured environment where older adults receive compassionate care, medication management, and therapeutic support — all focused on helping them return to their highest level of comfort and stability.

Because behind every behavior is a person — deserving of patience, understanding, and dignity.

🌧️ The gray skies and rainy days can do more than just dampen our plans — for many, this time of year also brings on feelings of sadness or low energy known as seasonal depression or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

If you’re feeling the weight of the weather, you’re not alone. Small steps like staying connected, getting sunlight when possible, and reaching out for support can make a big difference.

At Coosa Valley Medical Center’s Senior Behavioral Unit, we’re here to help our older adults navigate the emotional changes that can come with the seasons — because brighter days are ahead. ☀️

If you need to make a referral, please call 256.401.4670 and one of our experienced staff members will assist you.

Today, patients got creative (and a little festive!) decorating their very own trick-or-treat bags! Each design was made with their own hands — full of color, personality, and Halloween spirit.

This activity promoted self-expression, fine motor skills, and a sense of community that brightened everyone’s day.

This afternoon our patients enjoyed a cozy seasonal treat — pumpkin floats! 🎃 🎃 🎃 🎃 🎃 🎃 🎃 🎃 🎃 🎃 🎃 🎃

With the help of our caring staff, everyone mixed up their own ice cream float served in cheerful pumpkin cups that they decorated. The room was filled with laughter, conversation, and the sweet taste of fall!

Simple, hands-on activities like this spark joy, encourage participation, and bring a sense of comfort and togetherness to our patients. Every shared smile and moment of engagement makes a difference.

🕸️👻 Afternoons are always better with a little creativity and a lot of smiles! 🕸️ 👻

Today our patients (ages 55+) spent time making friendly little ghosts that will soon decorate their Trick-or-Treat bags for our upcoming Fall Festival!

Engaging in hands-on activities like this isn’t just fun — it’s therapeutic.

Crafting, laughing, and creating together help promote connection, fine motor skills, focus, and emotional well-being.

Our team ensures that everyone who is able participates, because staying involved gives our patients a sense of purpose and belonging — both of which are essential to healing.

We can’t wait to see their finished treat bags at the festival!

A heartfelt thank you to Miss Lillian Burnette for donating her gently used baby dolls to the Senior Behavioral Unit!

Doll therapy can be incredibly calming for individuals living with dementia. Holding or caring for a doll often helps reduce anxiety, ease agitation, and provide comfort through nurturing memories and a renewed sense of purpose.

It’s amazing how something so simple can bring such peace and connection.

The dolls have been bathed, clothed and will be given new life this week where they will bring joy and receive much love.

⭐️ Night Shift Shoutout! ⭐️

We’re proud to recognize two incredible nurses — Pamela Doss, LPN and Savannah Brazzell, MSN, RN — for their outstanding dedication on our Senior Behavioral Unit!

Both of these amazing night shift nurses go above and beyond every single shift — providing compassionate care, supporting their teammates, and ensuring our patients receive the very best. Their support staff recently took the time to recognize them for always being there — lending a hand, offering guidance, and making nights run smoothly for everyone.

Thank you, Pamela and Savannah, for your commitment, teamwork, and the positive impact you bring to every night. You make a difference in so many lives — patients and coworkers alike!
