International Women’s Day 2026

Women’s health in Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) has long been overlooked in research and clinical care.

Recent research shows that those with EDS face increased risks of several gynecologic and obstetric conditions, including endometriosis, pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, and pregnancy complications.

To address these gaps, The Ehlers-Danlos Society brought together clinicians, researchers, and community voices at the Female Health Summit to share knowledge and improve care.

Speakers highlighted key issues across the lifespan:

• Heavy menstrual bleeding and menstrual health
• Pelvic floor disorders and bladder symptoms
• Pregnancy and postpartum care in EDS and HSD
• Hormonal changes that may influence symptoms

Sessions also emphasized the importance of pelvic health therapy, informed pregnancy care, and listening to women’s lived experiences in healthcare.

This work reflects the message of International Women’s Day 2026: .

To improve women’s health in EDS and HSD, we must give:

• Research to better understand women’s health risks
• Education so healthcare professionals recognize these conditions
• Belief in women’s symptoms and experiences
• Equitable care across the lifespan

When we give these things, we gain earlier diagnosis, better treatment, and healthier lives.

Starting Feb 11 ...
WEEKLY Bendy AND Strong Classes @ Studio 505 Sylva.
5:45 pm.

What's it all about? This class is created specifically for folks who suspect or know they are hypermobile, have a diagnosis of hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS), or hypermobile spectrum disorder (HSD). It's also beneficial for those who want to learn how to strength train in a Smart and Safe manner.

The ULTIMATE GOALS and BENEFITS of our work together include:
- Gaining a good understanding of why our bendy body feels and behaves as it does, and how to feel more at home in it.
- Learning how to reduce or prevent recurrent injuries, flare ups, pain, fatigue, and progressive strength loss.
- Learning about resources for support of folks with these diagnoses.
- Getting stronger, and able to do more of what is important to you.

This is achieved through:
- Learning about our problematic movement patterns and how to switch that for more balanced ones.
- Using appropriate muscles for support and movement, instead of substituting with others that are unable to do the job efficiently.
- Reducing stress to ligaments and joint capsules (the seatbelts), by using muscles and tendons (the "brakes").

And it provides a foundation for continued strengthening to the level or activity type needed for achieving your personal goals.

You may proceed to heavy lifting, strenuous yard work, artistic dance, yoga hand balances, or just be better prepared for the unexpected activities and tasks, pushes, pulls, or lifts that Life brings to you!

Bring a pair of dumbbells, if you have some. You'll learn more about what kind of weights are appropriate for you as you go.

10 minute video from a Neurosurgeon with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, explaining ONE possible condition affecting those with hEDS, Craniocervical Instability. I appreciate her explanation and view, except for ONE notion. It's about the safety of Bendy people practicing yoga. Libby Hinsley PT addresses this SO skillfully in her book Yoga for Bendy People. Also, know that in PT school, we did not learn much at all about EDS, so not ALL PTs are able to help hypermobile patients. I have been focusing on this condition for about 5 years now, and have learned that typical PT is almost always not tolerated, nor is it helpful to those patients. If you are affected, or suspect that you or a loved one is, and need some help, feel free to get in touch or make an appointment to come in for a consultation with me in Sylva at Zen Bodyworks Studio

LET'S SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY. We cannot rely on our federal government to feed us.

Friends, there is no denying the inevitable struggle many of our neighbors are facing with the cuts in SNAP benefits and anticipated cuts to the WIC program.

WNC From the Ground Up is offering space to collect and distribute donations. There are many great organizations in our community, and this initiative is not designed in any way to undermine the work they are already doing, simply offering the extra space and hands for the food-focused organizations within our community.

This effort was born out of community organizers representing a wide range of non-profits and county agencies, with one goal in mind: to quickly get food to the organizations that need it.

Here are the ways you can help:
Check the current "wishlists" of the area organizations- donate those items.
Simply bring any food donations to WNC From the Ground Up; current hours are Monday-Friday, 8 am- 6 pm, and by appointment only on Saturday.
Volunteer for a shift! Visit this link https://wncfromthegroundup.org/volunteer to sign up.
Monetary donations will not be accepted at this location; please donate directly to your preferred organization.
Help when and where you can!

Thank you!
