You’ve likely seen the headlines about erythritol.

The headlines are scary. No one wants to risk poor health while working to improve health. Me included.

Let’s take a deeper dive, not into the news media headlines, but into the studies cited by the media.

First, here is the study referenced by most of the media. Yesterday the full article was free, including following some of their citations and looked at the graphs and charts. Today, it’s behind a paywall.

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-023-02223-9https

1. The researchers were not investigating erythritol initially. Instead, they were looking at a large cohort of folks who were mostly over the age of 60 and obese, and male, and, most of whom had high blood pressure 72%, a history of cardiovascular disease (CVD) 75%. About 22% of them had diabetes and nearly half had already had a heart attack. So... they were doing labs and noticed higher levels of erythritol, which MAY suggest a relationship, but doesn't equate a causal relationship. The researchers also note that some of the erythritol circulating in blood is ingested (eaten) and some is endogenous (made by the body). I didn't see a breakdown of how the sources of erythritol may have been associated with risk. Remember, the study was not designed to evaluate erythritol.

2. The conclusion of the article states: "In summary, the present studies suggest that trials investigating the impact of erythritol specifically, and artificial sweeteners in general, with appropriate duration of follow-up for clinically relevant outcomes, are needed. Following exposure to dietary erythritol, a prolonged period of potentially heightened thrombotic risk may occur. This is of concern given that the very subjects for whom artificial sweeteners are marketed (patients with diabetes, obesity, history of CVD and impaired kidney function) are those typically at higher risk for future CVD events."

3. Remember that no one looked at what the participants were eating WITH the erythritol in either of the human studies. In the large study where they stumbled over this info, these patients were older and had a history of health issues (see my comments above). Here's the other thing we know. People who don't consume erythritol are at high risk of stroke or cardiovascular disease IF they have diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, or any of the other conditions that these "subjects" had.

Always read the source and then track down their sources. There was no control of any confounding variables. Yes they had erythritol in their blood BUT what else were they eating? 75% of participants had high blood pressure. 72% had cardiovascular disease. The cohort was not healthy people. There’s no comparison data because the study design did not even include specifically researching erythritol. It’s like saying there were 400 car accidents in a year and 60% of those cars were white so white cars cause accidents. Uhm… no. A link does not mean CAUSE.

In addition to the concerns raised in the article, the article refers to previous studies that evaluated the use of erythritol and noted positive effects, including this one:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4037362/

And isn’t this interesting? Researchers must disclose any potential conflicts of interest. This is taken from the end of the article. Proctor and Gamble…

The other authors have reported that they have no relationships relevant to the contents of this paper to disclose.

Bottom line:
If you have any history of CVD or impaired kidney function, I wouldn't blame you for avoiding erythritol. Am I worried enough to stop using it? Not really. Am I worried enough to stop feeding it to loved ones? Not really, because it makes sense that patients with a history of diabetes, obesity, CVD and/or impaired kidney function would be at a heightened risk of thrombosis (clotting issues). I'm not convinced that using erythritol CAUSES this as the folks in the initial study already had these conditions. Perhaps their lab values were actually improved compared to when they started using erythritol? We don't know.

But with them media blaming everything from eggs and cold weather to climate change to an increase in heart attacks and strokes, I really do take everything they say with a grain of salt 😉

Just eat the bugs they say…

“Parasites were detected in 244 (81.33%) out of 300 (100%) examined insect farms. In 206 (68.67%) of the cases, the identified parasites were pathogenic for insects only; in 106 (35.33%) cases, parasites were potentially parasitic for animals; and in 91 (30.33%) cases, parasites were potentially pathogenic for humans. Edible insects are an underestimated reservoir of human and animal parasites.”

From 1 January 2018 came into force Regulation (EU) 2015/2238 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 November 2015, introducing the concept of “novel foods”, including insects and their parts. One of the most commonly used ...

According to the United States Office of General Accounting, over 125,000 people are killed every year from drugs that are properly prescribed by doctors. Additionally, since the drugs are used only to alleviate symptoms instead of removing the underlying conditions, they can never be stopped creating life long customers.

Drugs are not always bad, and the truth is that sometimes they are needed, but they should always be used in conjunction with a protocol based on finding and fixing the root cause.

Would you like to buy a car that fixed itself? The tires would never wear out. Spark plugs would be renewed. If someone crashed into it, the car would repair the dent. And as soon as the engine started getting out of tune, it would tune itself so that decades later it would still be running perfectly well. Here’s an amazing fact. Our bodies are like that. In general, that’s exactly what they do hundreds of times a day.

You get an injury – your body fixes it. You get a cold or a flu – your immune system cures it. You’re exposed to a toxin – your liver eliminates it. The only time you need help is when it can’t do those things anymore.

There are two reasons why this might happen.

1 is that you are not giving the body enough of the things it needs; sleep, minerals, vitamins, hormones, to sunlight.

2 is that your body is being or has been exposed to some toxin that is blocking its healing ability; heavy metals, smoking, infections, allergens, or drugs – even the drugs that Drs prescribe.

In the orthomolecular system, our job is twofold: 1. Find out what things your particular body needs that it isn’t getting, and make sure that it gets them, and 2. Find out what factors are blocking your ability to repair and get rid of them. The remedies we prescribe don’t actually do the healing – your body does!

In “normal range” does not mean you’re functioning optimally. You know when there is something off with your body. This day and age we need to arm ourselves with information to get the help we need.

Thyroid labs are notorious for this kind of oversight.

Medicine says to test TSH to see thyroid function. TSH is simply a hormone that tells your thyroid to ramp up or slow down its efforts. If it’s between .4-4.5 they’ll tell you things are fine and send you home.

The optimal TSH range is 1.5-3 for *most* people, because everybody’s physiology is a little bit different you may be higher or lower than that naturally and still feel great.

If you believe that you have thyroid issues, and your doctor only tests TSH and continues to tell you that you have no thyroid issues, then you need a new doctor. It is really that simple!

TSH is produced by the pituitary gland in cooperation with the hypothalamus gland, and there are many reasons why TSH can be high, low or even normal and you still be hypothyroid, hyperthyroid or have autoimmune thyroid disease.

For instance, TSH can be elevated if you have an iodine deficiency, or if you have a bromide toxicity, which would lead to a iodine deficiency, because they are competing elements. It can also be elevated if there are issues at the pituitary.

In fact, it is equally as likely, in almost all cases of hypothyroidism, the TSH levels will be normal, while the hormones that the thyroid actually produces, will be extremely low. I see this nonstop.

Do not trust the accuracy of testing your thyroid to your general practitioner unless they are going to do a full and complete thyroid panel that includes:

TSH
Total T3
Free T3
Reverse T3
T3U (T3 Resin Uptake)
Total T4
Free T4
Free T4 Index
TBG (Thyroid Hormone Binding Globulin)
TPO Antibodies
Anti-TG Antibodies

I have talked about the incredible power of the placebo effect, simply believing your body will heal creates healing but did you know placebo has an evil twin named nocebo?

Just as our expectations of a drug’s effectiveness can influence our reaction to a placebo, an expectation of side effects can cause us to experience them as well. This has manifested itself in a multitude of very extreme ways. An example of which is the sinister act of being told by a doctor that you have X number of months left to live.

One notable study documenting the effects of Nocebo took place in Italy where both people with and without lactose intolerance took what they thought was lactose (it wasn’t). Sure enough forty-four percent of those with intolerance and a staggering twenty-six percent without it developed symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort. As if tricking yourself into diarrhea and stomach cramps weren’t bad enough, imagine losing faith in your p***s working because of what your doctor told you?

Our next study was conducted on men taking Finasteride for their enlarged prostates. Half were told by the doctor that erectile disfunction was a possible side effect and the other half were not. Of the group told about the side effect, forty-four percent reported erectile dysfunction compared to only fifteen percent of the group that had not been told. Yikes

One patient participating in a trial for antidepressant medication swallowed twenty-six of the placebo pills in a su***de attempt. Even though they were completely harmless, his blood pressure somehow dropped dangerously low.

What beliefs about your own healing are getting in your way?

All those little signs and symptoms that we call disease are your body telling you something is wrong. We can pop a pill to mask the symptoms but we are always going to make the underlying issue worse that way.

A good example of this is stomach reflux. Contrary to popular belief, heartburn and GERD are caused by too little (not too much) stomach acid. When we test people having heartburn, indigestion and gas, over 90 percent of the time we find inadequate acid production by the stomach.

Americans spend more than $13 billion on acid stopping drugs each year. This expense might be justified if antacid drugs were actually curing heartburn and GERD, but the opposite is true. Not only do these drugs fail to treat GERD, they will make the underlying condition (not enough stomach acid) worse. This virtually necessitates the lifelong use of these medications for anyone who takes them with heinous flare ups when they stop.

While this is a nifty sales strategy for the drug companies, it’s a bitter pill to swallow (yes, pun intended) for those suffering.

Curing a disease means eliminating its cause, the symptoms don’t return once the treatment is removed. This of course is not the case with drugs for heartburn and GERD. As soon as the patient stops taking them, the symptoms return. And often they’re worse than they were before the patient started the drug.

Acid-suppressing drugs are associated with many adverse effects, including an increased risk of fractures, dementia, intestinal dysbiosis, nutrient malabsorption (your body can’t get nutrients if it’s not breaking down food) and kidney disease.

Pay attention to all the little messages you get from your body and seek help from someone who can help you find real answers. If you’re struggling with our example above reducing processed carbohydrate/sugar intake and adding HCL and digestive enzyme supplements will resolve your issues.

Who can relate?! This isn’t because you’re in your 30s, it’s because you’re mineral deficient. I sometimes see these lines in children(especially kids with MTHFR), on the flip side I see 60 year olds who don’t have them. It’s not your age, it’s your calcium sulfide levels.

Calc Sulph is a critical mineral in the body, it helps us gently chelate heavy metals. When we are deficient, horizontal skin folds appear under the eyes and it becomes much harder for our body to process and remove mercury, cadmium, aluminum, and lead. Yikes!!

If you have those lines and deep horizontal wrinkles in your forehead you have toxic levels of metals in your system. This is especially important to address if you are having health issues like fibromyalgia. Every Fibro client I have seen has toxic levels of metals in their system. Once you remove them the nervous system can heal. Neat huh?

If you’re a current client and you’re wondering if you’re getting this mineral, don’t worry it’s in your skin formula along with it’s good buddy silica that also plays a role in removing metals.
